Saegertown takes eighth at state golf tournament behind Gjovik
MEADVILLE TRIBUNE
STATE COLLEGE — The Saegertown boys golf team placed eighth at the PIAA Boys Golf Class 2A Championship tournament on Wednesday.
The tournament was hosted by Penn State University’s Blue Course. Saegertown fired a 323, 35-over 323, to claim eighth.
Freshman Mason Gjovik led the Panthers with a 69, which was the lowest individual score at the tournament. Gjovik was even through nine and 3-under on the back to come in 3-under on the day.
“Mason had a good round. He caught fire on the back with a few birdies,” Saegertown head coach Brian Hanley said. “He played it two days in a row so he had some course knowledge.”
Fellow freshman Tyler Cherpak carded an 81 for Saegertown. Ryder Bailey and Everett Gardner shot an 83 and a 90, respectively, to round out the scoring for Saegertown. Mason Allio’s 91 was not included in the team’s scoring.
“I was pleased with how we played.
Some of the kids were disappointed in their scores, but it’s a big stage,” Hanley said. “There are a lot of announcements and big crowds and clapping and we’re not really used to playing in situations like that.”
Saegertown was the District 10 runner up and earned an at-large bid to compete at the state tournament.
Cathedral Prep, the District 10 champion, placed second on Wednesday with a 305. Scranton Prep won the tournament at 8-over 296.
“I had the kids write their goals down at beginning of the year and we went over them last night,” Hanley said “Region title, we did that, district title, we nearly did that, and go to states, which was a pleasant surprise.”
Saegertown, which had no seniors this year, has a bright future.
“Obviously at the beginning of the year I had expectations to be better than last year. We dropped 20-25 strokes in region matches so that was very exciting. We have three juniors and their averages have dropped each year. hopefully that can drop again next year,” Hanley said. “We have very high expectations for next year. Overall, I am very pleased with this season.”

Meadville’s Ferry wins Class 3A title; Mahoney, Gjovik are runner-ups
By Alex Topor
MEADVILLE TRIBUNE
WOODCOCK TOWNSHIP — Meadville freshman Luke Ferry walked off Hole No. 9 at The Country Club of Meadville — something he’s done countless times — but this time he was a District 10 champion.
Ferry carded a 73 on Wednesday in the second and final day of individual competition at the District 10 Class 3A Boys Golf Tournament. After shooting a 78 on Tuesday, his total of 151 was five strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
“It’s great. It feels awesome,” Ferry said. “Coming into today I felt confident and ready to play better.”
Head coach Fred Garvey was equally if not more excited about Ferry’s win.
“The freshman came through for me. He played really, really well today. He was solid,” Garvey said. “He had one boo-boo on a hole where a drive got away from him, but a 73, with the conditions and not feeling the best, it was a pretty good day.”
Despite only being a freshman, Ferry has played The Country Club of Meadville plenty as it’s the Bulldogs’ home course. Also, Ferry’s father, Mike Ferry, is the club pro. Older brother, Ryan Ferry, claimed three D-10 runner- ups at the course before a college career. Needless to say, golf is in Ferry’s blood. But he felt no extra pressure or stress.
“No, not really (extra pressure). I came and played my own game,” Ferry said. “I didn’t worry about anything else.”
Ferry was paired with two teammates on Wednesday, brothers Robert and Patrick Mahoney. The Mahoneys each shot a 77 on Tuesday and shared the lead. Garvey said the brothers were a stroke away from each other until the last few holes. Patrick, a freshman, finished with a 79 to beat out his brother, a senior, for the No. 2 spot in the standings.
“Today’s round was a lot different than yesterday. I hit the ball about the same, but I wasn’t making the swings I made yesterday,” Patrick Mahoney said. “It wasn’t much of a difference and was only two shots worse, but two shots means a lot in the end.”
The top two finishers in the Class 3A field will advance to the state tournament hosted at Penn State University’s Blue and White Courses on Oct. 21 and 22.
“Making states was for sure a goal. I knew it would come down to the end and I knew today would be a good day because I was playing with my brother who is a senior. It came down to the last three holes or so,” Patrick Mahoney said. “I think it (playing with Robert Mahoney
and Ferry) added to the pressure because I know them and know what they would do. I know the shots they can hit and it’s way different playing with your friends compared to someone you don’t know.”
Meadville claimed the top three finishers and four of the top five. Ferry led at 151 followed by Patrick Mahoney (156), Robert Mahoney (162), Conner Zaffino of McDowell (163) and Elliot Konetsky of Meadville (165).
“It was a pretty good day for the Bulldogs. Bittersweet though with Robert. At least we have another match. He did a great job. That was really hard for everyone involved including him and his brother,” Garvey said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Ferry’s title gave Meadville its first individual champion since Bill Wilkinson in 2002.
The Bulldogs will return to The Country Club of Meadville on Tuesday for a PIAA sub-regional tournament with the champions from District 6, 8 and 9. If the team wins, the ‘Dogs will compete for a team title at State College.
Gjovik advances to states
Saegertown freshman Mason Gjovik finished his first District 10 Class 2A Boys Golf Tournament tied for second place, which punched his ticket to the state tournament.
Gjovik finished the first day in second with a 70. His 74 on Wednesday put him at 144 through two days and tied him for second with Cathedral Prep’s Connor Laird.
“Reaching states was definitely a personal goal and I think my coach had it for me too, so I’m happy to be going. I just want to do my best at states and go home not regretting any decisions I made there,” Gjovik said. “Today (Wednesday) was shaky at the start, but I managed to make some pars and get it back together.”
Gjovik finished behind Wilmington’s Santino Toscano.
Toscano’s total of 143 just edged Gjovik. Toscano carded a 9 on the final hole and left the door open for Gjovik, but the Saegertown Panthers pushed a difficult putt just wide to avoid tying for first.
Gjovik is the first freshman in Saegertown history, according to head coach Brian Hanley, to advance to states.
Locals go out swinging
Also in Class 2A, Conneaut’s Charlie Woods competed on Wednesday. The junior followed Tuesday’s 77 with an 86 on Wednesday for a two-day total of 163. Woods finished 14th in the field. The top eight move on to states.
Meadville senior Brooke Hart, competing in the Class 3A girls tournament, brought home some hardware.
Hart improved on Monday’s score of 89 with an 88 on Wednesday. Her 177 placed her third overall. Fort LeBoeuf’s Cassidy Conn won the tournament. Only the champion advances to Penn State.

Meadville wins Class 3A title, Saegertown takes second in 2A at District 10 Tournament
By Alex Topor
MEADVILLE TRIBUNE
WOODCOCK TOWNSHIP — The Meadville boys golf team, despite starting three ninth-graders, walked away from the District 10 Class 3A Boys Golf Championship on Tuesday as district champions.
Meadville’s 316 edged McDowell’s 336 in the two-team race at The Country Club of Meadville.
“It’s a pretty great achievement. We start a really young team,” Meadville head coach Fred Garvey said. “We started three freshmen all year and you don’t know what you’re gonna get on this big stage.”
Leading the way for Meadville were Robert and Patrick Mahoney. The brothers each carded a 77 to pace the Bulldogs. Robert, a senior and the lone upperclassman on the team, made the cut after missing it by one stroke last year.
“I’m happy with how I played. It wasn’t the best season I’ve had, but I’ve started to pick it up at the end here. I tried to carry the momentum into today,” Robert Mahoney said. “I made some putts, made some good swings and some bad swings, but I was able to get it in the barn.”
Patrick Mahoney, a freshman, walked off the course just a few minutes after his older brother. After they realized they were even on the day, the Mahoney’s shared a quick embrace before getting back into some brotherly competitiveness.
“I hit the ball well. I missed a few shots I could have made, but overall I’m happy with a 77,” Patrick Mahoney said. “It’s always fun seeing what the other shoots and see if we can beat them. It’s a fun rivalry we have for sure. It makes us better.”
Older brother agreed the back-and-forth is all in good faith.
“It’s constant back-and-forth, constant banter, but it’s all fun and we always root for each other,” Robert Mahoney said.
Another freshman, Luke Ferry, was next with a 78.
“Today (Tuesday) was shaky. I left a lot of shots out there and could have played a lot better,” Ferry said. “But, we’re in position for tomorrow (Wednesday). I just need to play better. Hit the ball better and putt better, that’s it.”
Freshman Elliot Konetsky turned in an 84 and sophomore Michael Mangine had a 98 to round out the scoring for Meadville. Meadville’s title was the program’s first since 2015 when the Bulldogs beat Cathedral Prep by one stroke.
Meadville’s home course is The Country Club of Meadville and the players certainly spend a lot of time playing there. According to Garvey, that only makes the pressure of doing well at the district tournament even greater.
“Some say it’s an advantage, I say we shoot those numbers away too. But there is some pressure here. They’re expected to play well here,” Garvey said. “For Luke, you walk out and your dad is running it (Luke’s father, Mike Ferry, is the club pro). It’s an added weight. The Mahoneys grew up here basically.
“But, it was a really fun year. Great kids, great families and great support at a wonderful place.”
For the individual tournament, the cut line was 83. The Mahoneys, Ferry and Konetsky will return to the course this morning to conclude the two-day competition. The Mahoneys and Ferry will play together with a 9:50 a.m. tee time while Konetsky will tee off at 9:40.
Regardless of who wins today’s event, Meadville will advance as a team to a Class 3A sub-regional tournament with Districts 5, 6, 8 and 9. The tournament will be held at The Country Club of Meadville on Tuesday. The winner will advance to the state tournament later this month at Penn State’s Blue and White courses.
The top two individuals from today’s tournament will compete at the PIAA tournament.
“They’ve competed against each other all summer. I expect it to be no different today,” Garvey said. “They play each other all the time and put the time in. Usually when you put the time in, good things happen. I’m excited to see what happens. All three are playing really well and Elliot can get it going too and could jump up there. I am just thrilled for Robert, a senior who missed day two last year with an 81.”
Saegertown takes second in 2A
In Class 2A, the Saegertown boys golf team placed second. The Panthers’ total of 319 was eight strokes behind Cathedral Prep.
“I had dreams of the greatest upset in the world and it was close. Eight strokes from Prep, I am very proud of my team,” Saegertown head coach Brian Hanley said. “The good news is I don’t lose anybody. These guys are all coming back.”
Saegertown freshman Mason Gjovik fired a 70 to pace the Panthers. Fellow freshman Tyler Cherpak carded an 80. Ryder Bailey (83), Everett Gardner (86) and Mason Allio (88) were all sub-90 on the day.
“I am very pleased. All five of our kids shot below their average and what else could I ask for,” Hanley said. “I told the guys ‘You play here a lot, just do what you do.’ If you told me we’d shoot a 319 at the beginning of the day I would have called you a liar.”
In the individual tournament, the cut line was set at 79. Wilmington’s Santino Toscano had the low for the day at 67.
Gjovik’s 70 will place him with Toscano, Fairview’s Anthony Laboda and Cathedral Prep’s Cooper Wierzchowksi in the 9:30 tee time.
“I’m happy with how I ended today (Tuesday). I started pretty rough, but ended strong so I’m happy about that,” Gjovik said. “I just need to continue the way I played on the back and hopefully I’ll qualify for states.”
The top eight finishers in today’s Class 2A competition will move on to the state tournament.
Also representing Crawford County today will be Conneaut junior Charlie Woods. Woods’ first-round score of 77 was tied for the sixth-lowest round.

Several local golfers vie for District 10 titles at boys tournament
By Alex Topor
MEADVILLE TRIBUNE
The District 10 Boys Golf Tournament opens today at The Country Club of Meadville and several local golfers could be going home with some hardware.
Today’s team tournament begins at 10 a.m. Meadville and McDowell will battle for the Class 3A trophy. The Bulldogs won the Region 6 title and could take the district title home as well.
Region 6 Golfer of the Year Luke Ferry, a freshman, has the lowest average at the tournament with a 74.5. Mc-Dowell’s Ethan Bock is next at 78.5. Fellow Meadville freshman Patrick Mahoney also has a sub-80 average at 79.25.
Team scores come from the top four scores on the day. Besides Ferry and Mahoney, Meadville also has the fifth-lowest average in Elliot Konetsky (80.75) and the sixth-lowest in Robert Mahoney (82.75).
“McDowell is a very good team that is well coached. I expect us to compete with them, however we do start four very talented first-year varsity players as well as a senior, Robert Mahoney, who has been an amazing leader this season for this team,” Meadville head coach Fred Garvey said. “If we can handle the pressure of the District 10 tournament, it should be a great match. I’m looking forward to watching my guys compete.”
For the two-day individual tournament, the top eight finishers and ties from today will compete Wednesday to conclude the contest.
“Luke, Patrick, Elliot, Robert and Michael (Mangine) have worked very hard this golf season and throughout the summer. I think it would be amazing if any of them could earn a trip to the state tournament,” Garvey said. “They are very talented and driven. It has been a real pleasure to coach them this season.”
The Class 2A team tournament will consist of region champions Lakeview, Hickory, Saegertown, Rocky Grove and Cathedral Prep.
Cathedral Prep, which was in Class 3A for the last several cycles, features two of the three lowest averages in Cooper Wierzchowksi (73.5) and Connor Laird (73.83). Saegertown freshman Mason Gjovik has the second-lowest average in the field at 73.75.
At the Marquette Invitational, which is held at the Country Club every year, 28 teams from District 10 competed a few weeks ago. Cathedral Prep won the tournament with a 291. Lakeview was fifth (318), Hickory was seventh (323), Saegertown 11th (337) and Rocky Grove 17th (345). Meadville was sixth at 322, 20 strokes ahead of fellow Class 3A McDowell.
“We’re gonna try to have a low -scoring day. I’m hoping someone can step up and be a hero for us. Anything can happen,” Saegertown head coach Brian Hanley said. “The pressure of playing at districts is very real and sometimes it can be too much for some people. That can lead to interesting scores at the tournament.”
The course could be soggy as hurricane Helene’s aftermath doused the region in rain over the weekend, which would only work in Saegertown’s favor, Hanley said.
“We’re mudders. I try and train these guys to not be fair-weather golfers. I make sure they have rain gloves and can play in some adversity,” Hanley said. “At least once a week we will play a round with only a few clubs
or only woods, just to try and be ready for any adversity that can come our way.”
Individually, the top 15 finishers and ties will play on Wednesday for the second day of competition. Then the top eight finishers will move on to states.
“Mason was born and raised to play golf. Individually, we would like to see him and Tyler qualify for states,” Hanley said. “I tell them not to go in with any expectations as far as numbers are concerned. Just take it one shot at a time, then the scores will follow.”
Tyler Cherpak is Saegertown’s No. 2 and has an 82.75 average.
“Tyler is a natural athlete. He didn’t even really pick up clubs till late July because he is a big baseball guy,” Hanley said. “I told him I had no expectations for him this year, but secretly I did, and he exceeded my expectations.”
Conneaut is sending junior Charlie Woods to the tournament. Woods’s average of 80 is 16th-best in the field.
Saegertown’s Ryder Bailey, a junior, also made the individual tournament.

Saegertown aims to build on last year’s success
By Trevor Teubner
MEADVILLE TRIBUNE
The Saegertown boys golf team had a lot of success last season, winning Region 3 and having four golfers join the all-region team. But, head coach Brian Hanley believes that this team could be even better.
“The roster is a little bit smaller,” Hanley said. “Last year I had 12 players and now I have eight. But, we have two quality players that are freshman this year. Mason Gjovik and Tyler Cherpak. Those two are the real deal.”
Gjovik and Cherpak are already making an impact on the team this season. Gjovik shot a 77 at their first Mega Match of the season on Aug. 12 with Cherpak shooting an 82. But, even with how good the freshmen are, the rest of the team is loaded, too.
“Everett (Gardner) and Ryder (Bailey) are both so important,” Hanley said. “Everett has been playing really well at practice, he’s put in a lot of good work. He has natural abilities, and he’s a tough competitor. There is nowhere to hide in this sport, and he is built for it.”
Gardner shot a 92 on Aug. 12, as the No. 2 golfer on the chart.
The Panthers have no shortage of golf talent, even with Wyatt Zirkle graduating. Zirkle was Region 3 Golfer of the Year last year, an all-region first-team choice and competed in the district tournament. Jon Grundy has graduated as well, finishing as an all-region first-team choice. Grundy also competed in the district tournament and placed 12th.
In the team section of the tournament, Saegertown scored a 366.
Even with such massive holes to fill, Hanley believes that the team has already begun to continue the success of their former golfers.
“The hole has absolutely been taken care of,” Hanley said. “Mason Gjovik is only a freshman, but he has come in ready to play. Even at his age, he’s been in a lot of competition and he is ready for the No. 1 role. He’s a quick learner, and I expect him to get better and better.”
Even with all of the talent the roster has, golf is a mental sport, and that can sometimes get in the way of ability. However, Hanley is confident that his group can believe in themselves more, and prepare to win another region and district title.
“Everyone is playing the way you expect them to be playing,” Hanley said. “And I think everyone is going to get better. Preparation is important to golf. Scouting out courses, working on all the little things that get you to that hole. Our players are out playing each course and getting ready. I have a lot of trust in this year’s team.”
