While this class explores all of East Asia, there are particular units and projects that focus on Japan. Within the Ancient Foundations unit, students have an opportunity to research topics that include those within Japanese history. There is also a Modern Japan unit, in which each project must be connected to current social, political, environmental, or cultural themes.
In addition, there are two major mock summits that encompass pivotal moments and developments within East Asia. The first addresses actions during World War II in an attempt to reconcile issues and controversies that are still profoundly divisive. The final East Asia Summit explores current challenges regarding social equality, human rights, public health, disaster response, economic development, environmental sustainability, and nuclear non- proliferation. Within both summits, there is a delegation that specifically represents Japan.
Tokyo Friends and Temple Japan have expressed interest in connecting with our students during those periods of research and reflection. Whether that be forwarding questions to students and families with experience in their topics or sharing relevant resources and materials. Tokyo Friends is particularly interested in having us share projects and videos that they could potentially use to practice English with their students. In previous years, they have also displayed some of our projects and pictures from our class activities throughout their school.
