On February 8, Philabundance, a non-profit organization, came to Penn Charter. They first talked about how they started in 1984 when Pamela Rainey Lawler believed no one should go hungry. Philabundance then listed their partners with over 350 other food banks helping distribute food. Philabundance serves about 90,000 people per week with nutritious food. They worked with the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Philadelphia Eagles! Not only do they serve food to people, but Philabundance works to help raise awareness of hunger and wants more people to know how important hunger is worldwide. This 6th-grade assembly helped many students learn more about food insecurity and helped us understand how it is a major global problem. In Philadelphia, almost 250,000 people are food insecure, but luckily we have Philabundance and many other organizations to help decrease that number.

Last Friday, we met a writer for the Philly Inquirer and OPC Aaron “Ace” Carter. Although he never wanted to be a journalist, Ace shared his passion for basketball as a kid. During his time speaking, Ace shared a shocking story with everybody. After Ace recently graduated, he was working at a desk job. As Ace was sitting at his desk, a car went through the wall and hit him! Amazingly, Ace still has a love for sports even though it was devastating to hear that he would never be able to play basketball again from the doctors. Ace knew something had to change, so he began writing! This shocked Ace because when he was a child, a reporter gave Ace’s father (the new Sixers head coach at the time) a hard time about coaching a women's college basketball team. From that day on, Ace thought he would never become a journalist. But as Ace started to begin writing, he loved it! Once Ace recovered from the accident, he knew he couldn’t go back to his job. Ace started to become recognized for his journalism, and luckily became a writer for the Philly Inquirer! In 2019, Ace wrote a story in the Inquirer about student-athletes who face hunger. The story helped people to see the many different sides of hunger and the issues with athletes who are food insecure. Today, you can catch Ace at any sporting event looking for a lead to a story!
