Would you believe us if we told you that 4000-6000 tons of sunscreen gets deposited in the ocean every year? That's more than 13 tons per day! The problem with sunscreen in our oceans is that it contains harmful chemicals like, oxybenzone, that affect coral reefs. Coral plays an important role in the ecosystems by creating habitats, protecting coasts from strong ocean currents, and absorbing almost 5 million tons of carbon per day. Oxybenzone can cause coral bleaching, growth deformities and damage to coral DNA. All these problems can destabilize ecosystems and eliminate biodiversity, leading to the loss of natural habitats. This loss of coral reefs amplifies the impacts of climate change, leading to the further deterioration and fragility of our planet.Â
