Music Review:
Drake's Latest
by Jack Psaros
Things change with each coming year but one thing has been a constant for the past decade -- Drake dropping a banger album. On October 6th at 12:00am, millions of fans refreshed their music apps to the scene of a new Drake tape, “For All The Dogs”. With 8 studio albums, 75 billion spotify streams, and 193 awards, it’s safe to call Drake the artist of the decade.
For all The Dogs has had quite the first week, selling around 420,000 copies. But is it as good as the numbers reflect? Let's find out.
Track 1 Virginia Beach 8.4/10: Virginia Beach is a very heartfelt introduction to the album, Drake raps over a Frank Ocean sample mostly about how he yearns to have the early stages of his relationship with a girl back, contrasting the past with the present.
Track 2 Amen 7.6/10 : Amen marks the first collaboration between Drake and up and coming artist, Teezo Touchdown. This track is all about Drake asking his partner for forgiveness of his past.
Track 3 Calling For You 9/10 : Calling For You is a classic Drake and 21 Savage track. I especially like 21’s verse. If there wasn’t a random girl talking for 2 minutes in the middle of the track, this would have easily been a candidate for best song on the tape.
Track 4 Fear Of Heights 9.5/10: Easily top 2 track on the album. Drake snapped for 2 minutes and 35 seconds. The final 45 seconds of this song solidify it as one of the best.
Track 5 Daylight 10/10: This absolute masterpiece of a song fades in from a Tony Montana audio clip to one of the hardest Drake verses I’ve ever heard in my 17 years. Best song on the album
Track 6 First Person Shooter 9/10: Drake and Jcole talk their talk on this track about their legendary statuses in the music game. My favorite lyric on this album has to come from this song where Drake talks about surpassing Micheal Jackson as the GOAT.
Track 7 IDGAF 6.6/10: Call me biased but this track sounded like any other open verse Yeat song that Drake just filled in. Also doesn’t help that this song was leaked months ago.
Track 8 7969 Santa 8.2/10: This track details Drake's past relationship with his ex-girlfriend from the summer, he seems to be dissing her. I loved the subtle Chief Keef sample in the background every once in a while.
Track 9 Slime You Out 8.5/10: The lead single for the album that sets the tone for the rest of the tape. Wasn’t a big SZA fan until I heard her feature not only on Drake’s Album but Travis Scott’s Utopia as well. Ending of the song was very powerful to listen to.
Track 10 Bahamas Promises 8/10: This song starts with dogs barking in the background before Drake starts floating on this chill beat that gives me the vibe of an evening in the Bahamas. Drake hints at a former relationship with Hailey Bieber in this song.
Track 11 Tried Our Best 9.2/10 : Drake raps about a toxic relationship where he did nothing but treat his partner right and problems still arose. A topic many can relate to. Drake's rhyme scheme on this track is nothing short of genius.
Track 12 Drew A Picasso 8/10 : This track is based on the challenges of a romantic relationship filled with complexities and turmoil. Drake keeps a sense of frustration and pain as he reflects on past mistakes and missed opportunities.
Track 13 Members Only 8.4/10 : A track that resembles a world of intimacy and regret from Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR. Drake talks about a girl that he was so close with that he felt she was a part of his clique. Drake fills this song with very clever wordplay.
Track 14 What Would Pluto Do 7.8/10 : A song title with Pluto but no Future feature really let me down. Future is known for his toxic lifestyle in relationships which is why Drake expresses this theme and repeats the line, “what would pluto do?”
Track 15 All The Parties 9.2/10 : A laid back track featuring Chicago legend Chief Keef, the theme of this song matches perfectly with the album. Personally, it is one of my favorite songs and will definitely be added to the playlist.
Track 16 8am in Charlotte 9.6/10: Anytime Drake includes a time and location in a title, you already know what you’re in for. One of the best songs on the album, tons of clever lyrics and punchlines that make for a great listen.
Track 17 Gently 6.6/10: Not a big fan of spanish music but I’ll give it a decent rating based on Drake’s versatility and ability to kill any genre of music.
Track 18 Another Late Night 8.4/10 : Drake and Lil Yachty have quietly become one of my favorite duos in the music industry because of tracks like this. Song also has a great music video on youtube.
Track 19 Away From Home 7.9/10 : This song is a powerful reminder of Drake’s come up and how far he’s come as not only an artist, but a person as well. Lot’s of self reflection is present throughout the track.
Track 20 Polar Opposites 8.6/10: This track is very emotional and includes a lot of vulnerability from Drake which he has shown a lot of throughout the album. A very thought provoking and introspective outro.
Final Rating 8.5/10: While I didn’t like it as much as other albums released this year and I’m not that big of a Drake fan, it’s hard to deny or ignore his greatness. Very enjoyable album that has a lot of replayability.
AI: The Power of Innovation, or Cause for Concern?
by Jack Psaros
From a simple personal assistant such as Siri or Alexa, to being able to write very professional pieces of writing, AI has come a long way. As companies continue to advance AI at a very fast pace, one must wonder, will there be a day where artificial intelligence takes over the human race?
It was just a couple years ago when AI was limited but still very useful. AI was able to do an intensive google search and other simple functions. This was great for a while but now machine learning and AI are becoming much more powerful. This can be seen as good and bad. On one hand it's great that AI can perform tedious tasks and create pieces of art. On the other hand, students and even professionals are using Chat GPT to write up important documents they then pass off as their own. To prevent this from happening, teachers at PHS and other schools are actively training on how to detect AI writing in assignments.
Senior Matt Delcore had something to say about the use of AI in school, “well I think it’s a great tool for students to use as long as they’re responsible with it.”
Here at PHS, English teacher Mrs. Mrowka said, “The english department has spent the last two department meetings experimenting with Chat GPT, we looked at unit design and lesson planning.”
When in the right hands and with good morals, AI can be very useful to almost everyone; it can help generate ideas, be a personal assistant, or even help with revisions. But with the power to recreate voices, create eerily realistic photos, and fabricate essays and assignments, is this too much? Does AI need legal restrictions and regulations? Since it’s such a new concept and tool, nobody knows. Think about this the next time you load up Chat Gpt, or any other AI.
