Female Athlete of the Month:
Maggie MacDonald

by Jayden Leonard

Maggie Macdonald is a Senior captain striker on the Pembroke High School girls soccer team. Although the season did not have the outcome they had hoped for, MacDonald shined throughout the season, especially in the month of October.

MacDonald scored in almost every game the girls played this October, scoring the lone goal in the girls 1-0 victory on senior night against Nauset. Maconald quickly became a fan favorite after her performance due to her reserved personality but outstanding skill on the field.

The Titan Times asked the captain a few questions about the season as well as her plans next year:

Q: What do you think is the key to your success this past month, and throughout the season as a whole?

A: “I think our formation change we made against Plymouth North from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-2 really helped us. Even though it was risky to try out a new formation during a game and not practice, I think we benefited from it. Since this change we have had better results and looked better as a team in the second half of the season”

Q: How do you stay in soccer shape during the offseason, do you play on any clubs?

A: In the offseason I play club soccer for Seacoast United. We typically have practice 3 times a week and have 2-3 preseason tournaments in preparation for the spring season. Outside of practice I also make sure to get in my own practice at home or at the turf.

Q: What's the hardest part about staying consistent throughout the season?

A: I think the hardest part is when we have more than two games in a week. This season we have had some back to back weeks with three games each week. It gets pretty tiring by the end of the week especially when you add in homework and obligations. It can be hard to stay consistent but I think the team has done a great job working hard in and out of practice to keep improving.

Q: Do you plan to play soccer in college?

A: Yes! My goal is to play soccer in college and I think that it is going to be so much fun. Right now I am trying to decide and I am considering my options.

Male Athlete of the Month: Shane Crowley

by Luke Lamar

Boys Varsity Soccer senior, Captain Shane (fries) Crowley, has been highlighted as this month’s male athlete of the month. Crowley has had an outstanding soccer season thus far, Pembroke’s one and only attacking midfielder, number 10, currently leads the patriot league in points, with 9 goals and 19 assists for a whopping 28 points overall.

Recently The Titan Times was able to sit down with Crowley and ask him a few questions about himself and the team.

Q: “How has this year's team differed from past teams?”

A:”We have a young team, so leadership from the seniors is very important. On a team with 6 freshmen, being able to lead from the front and set an example is huge.

Q: “What are your goals and aspirations for the remainder of the season?”

A: “Win a state championship. We were so close to our goal last year, and this year we all plan to give everything we have in order to make it happen.”

Q: How does it feel to lead the Patriot League in points?

A: “It feels great. I have never really been one to care about stats, I mean I would sacrifice all of that for a state title. Obviously, my stats are just a result of my teammates, especially considering that many of my assist have come from set pieces. Without ball winning teammates like Jack Duperre, Gabe Rushing, and Danny Flynn, that wouldn’t be possible."

The boys soccer team, (13-2-3) have had an outstanding season thus far. All the boys have their eyes set on the main goal, winning a championship. Led by coach Adam Scott, The boys plan to give their hearts for the cause in order to end their season with a bang, and potentially make PHS history.

With a loss to Plymouth South most recently, they are hoping to come back from this loss and get a win against Archie’s. Their strong suit on the season is their run game.

Volleyball

Pembroke volleyball has had its ups and downs this season but, unfortunately lost in the playoffs. The girls had a long and fun run during the entirety of their season, while picking each other up every day and kept working hard. Senior Captain Maddy Devonshire said, "My thoughts on the game from the other day are that I feel as a team we all fell short in the last two sets from exhaustion and pressure. We all had this hope to win, but it became too much. We also didn't have the best circumstances with refs, and getting carded multiple times and losing points because of those calls. Overall it was a rough game but we played as a family and left our best out on the court. I cherish Pemvol, and I see a very bright future for this team!"
