Emily Stone is a senior hockey player at Pembroke High School. She wears Jersey number 21 and her position is defense. She has been a prominent team-player and has been described to be “a solid defensive core,” by HNIB News.
Q: When did you join varsity?
A: “I've been playing varsity hockey since 8th grade.”
Q: What is your favorite memory from playing on varsity?
A: “One of my favorite memories was during the first round of the playoffs vs. Martha’s Vineyard. Our team was able to leave school early and take a ferry to the Vineyard. We ended up winning that game and moving onto the next round.”
Q: Have you or are you planning on going to college to continue with hockey?
A: “I’m not committed to a sport for college and I’m not planning on continuing sports after high school.”
Q: What are your predictions for this year’s hockey season?
A: “This year we have a lot of good young talent on our team, we all get along really great and we’re hoping to make it far in the playoffs and have a great season together. As the season progresses I know our team will become stronger.”
Q: What is your advice to other athletes who may look up to you?
A: “My advice is to work hard every day, show up on the days you don’t want to because, soon it will all be over. Don’t give up on yourself if things aren’t going how you want them to, keep putting in the work. High school goes by fast so enjoy your teammates, the locker room , and give your best everyday.”

Senior Nick McCarthy and captain of the track team was voted male athlete of December and is excited for the winter sports season to start. Nick participates in shot put and has played winter track since junior year. He's in contention to make All States this year and make New Balance Nationals.
Q: Are you prepared for the season?
A: “Yes, I started in the offseason, going to workouts, getting in the weightroom and getting outside practicing my throwing.”
Q: What are your expectations for the season?
A: “We have a tough schedule and should be able to turn around some expectations and have a good season.”
Q: How do you feel about the loss of seniors?
A: “It heavily affects us because of our depth for sprinters who were very good. Luka and I should be able to earn more points this year than what we had last year.”
Q: What is your PR?
A: “My personal record is 48”7.”
Q: How far do you want to throw this season?
A: “I want to break the school record which is 54ft."

Winter Sports Tryouts

Winter sports tryouts were held the first week of December, and were followed by pre-season scrimmages that weekend. Girls Hockey kicked off the first tryout starting at 5:00 am 12/1.
Senior Hannah D’Angelo, Captain of the Girls Hockey Team says she was, “Very prepared, training through summer workouts and off season playing.” D’Angelo says she thinks the team will go, “20-0” and is, “Very excited to get back in the rink with the girls.”
Senior Cassie Long, Captain of the Swim Team, thinks the team will, “Do well with a lot of new swimmers on the team.” Long says she is, “Excited for the first meet of the season on 12/11.
Senior Callahan Nee, Assistant Captain of the Boys Hockey Team says he prepared for tryouts by, “Getting a good night sleep.” Nee thinks the team will do “Awesome” this year.
Sophomore Ayden Brandon plays for the Boys Hockey Team and says he has prepared for tryouts through, “Off-ice training.”
Sophomore Brock Figueiredo plays for the Boys Hockey Team and says the team will go, “20-0.”
Winter sports at PHS include Girls & Boys Basketball, Gymnastics, Girls & Boys Ice Hockey, Indoor track, Wrestling, and Swimming. Seasons officially start the week following tryouts and depending on whether teams qualify or not, state playoffs will be held mid February.
