Pembroke High School offers a plethora of interesting and fun electives, but one of the most popular electives for upperclassmen is far and away AP Psychology. Titan Times staff sat down with Mr. Jackson to inquire about this hot-ticket elective.
Q: What are the main subjects of AP Psych?
A: The main topics that students learn about are the fundamentals of why humans think and behave in the ways they do. We look at this through many perspectives, including mostly biological, cognitive, behavioral, and social perspectives. We also spend time discussing clinical psychology, focusing on psychological disorders and therapy.
Q: Why do you think AP Psych is so popular?
A: I think it's a popular course mostly because it's very relatable for students. They can connect a lot of what we discuss in class to their own lives, which makes it relevant. In addition to the interesting topics that we cover, there are also a number of fun activities that we can do in class, which makes the class more enjoyable.
Q: What are your favorite parts of teaching AP Psych?
A: In addition to the activities and demonstrations that we do in class, my favorite parts about the course are getting people to open their eyes as to why we actually think the way we do. We all make mistakes and have thoughts that don't make sense, so it's nice to see people realize that it's normal. Also, students hopefully get a sense of thinking critically about long-held assumptions that aren't true, especially the infamous 'if we could only use more than 10% of our brain...' myth.
Q: What other electives should students take if they enjoyed AP Psych?
A: Electives that would naturally have some crossover with Psychology would be Sociology, Forensics, Street Law, Marketing, Philosophy, etc. Oh, and of course, History of Modern Music.
Seniors Ethan Keane and Shane Gremlich-Noonan expressed similar sentiments. When asked why he took AP Psych, Gremlich-Noonan stated that he simply wanted another AP class, but had found AP Psych had become one of his favorites. “Everything is really cool and interesting,” Gremlich-Noonan said.
When asked if he would recommend AP Psych to other students, Keane stated, “Yes! I would! It’s very fun, and is one of the only classes I actively look forward to.”
Restaurant Review:
Alumni Sports Cafe
by Evelyn Nichols
The Alumni Sports Cafe may be convenient, but does the experience live up to its location? According to PHS, Pembroke’s local sports cafe could be worth the short drive.
The food is what keeps Alumni busy. “Most of the food I tried there has been very good, and I have not reached anything I did not enjoy”, sophomore Colin Scarcelli stated.
Mrs. Mrowka also mentioned, “I love the pizza at the Alumni. If you like pub pizza, it's the best. It is crispy on the bottom and has a good amount of cheese on the top, without too much tomato sauce.” Alumni’s pizza is a favorite of Pembroke.
Not only is the pizza a favorite, but freshmen Ella Price added, “I like the buffalo chicken caesar wrap with a side of fries. I get the fries every time I go there.” Overall, Alumni has been said to have exceptional food.
Also standing out, Alumni’s service has been said to be very notable. According to Price, “It does not take long to get your food.” Wait times are a very crucial part of a good restaurant, making Alumni stand out.
Expanding on Price’s comment, Scarcelli said, “at other places people have experienced bad wait times and rude waiters, but at Alumni Sports Cafe, I don't seem to have to worry about that!” Adding to the importance of Alumni’s wait times, service does not seem to be an issue either. Their excellent service separates them from other restaurants.
Mrs. Mrowka also added, “Every time I've been the service has been outstanding.” Optimal service is something that Alumni can definitely provide.
Price mentioned, “Whenever someone asks where I want to go out, I pick Alumni.” With short wait times, good service, and good food, Alumni is a beloved restaurant of Pembroke that PHS approves of!
