What does a normal week look like in Journalism?
Every Monday we will sign up for stories for the next week. These are your major and summative assignments.
You will also be assigned to copy edit a story for the week. You will fill out the copy edit form, turn it in, then edit the piece. You will also create the graphic for the story.
Most weeks you will have an additional formative assignment. This may be graphics practice, writing reflections, grammar practice, AP style practice, or a writing assignment.
Major Assignments
News Story
You will write a news article. This may include politics, international affairs, health or education news, or business news. It can also include entertainment, celebrity, and arts and culture news. This is always objective writing that is giving information about an event.
Feature Story
You will write a feature article. This article is about a specific person, event, or group. Your writing will be highlighting the topic and giving information about the specifics of said person or event. You will write in 3rd person.
Sport Story
You will write a sports article. This article is about sports that are going on in the school. It may be an article about a specific game, team, or athlete’s performance.
Opinion Story
You will write an opinion article. In these articles, you will include your own personal opinion on the topic. You may have to send out polls to gain a general census of opinions. This shouldn’t be objective, but you will include both sides of the argument.
Choice Story #1, #2, & #3
Besides one story from each section, you will also be required to write at least two more stories of your choosing throughout the semester. These can be stories from any of the four sections.
Pekin Voice Article
Once a month, The Pekin Voice, the local newspaper, asks for one of our students to write an article for them. I will ask students to write an article for the local paper instead of a normal Dragon’s Journal story for that week. This grade will be equivalent to all other articles.
5 Essential Things
You will be asked to write a script with another classmate for the weekly "5 Essentials" video broadcasts. You will write about 5 activities, events, or highlights for the upcoming week. Then, you will be on camera to do a news broadcast that will be posted on the PCHS social media pages.
Graphics
You will be responsible for making graphics for each story that you copy edit throughout the semester. You will also be responsible for making 2 or more graphics for the Dragon’s Journal throughout the semester. These graphics will be created on canva.
Copy Edits
Weeks when you are not writing a story, you will be asked to copy edit one of the stories that someone is writing. You will be responsible for completing a copy editing sheet, sharing it with me, editing the story, and creating the graphic for that story.
