What does Freshman English entail?
We work on a number of skills throughout the year including grammar, analysis, themes, characterization, symbols, etc. Along with these skills that we continue to develop, we also work on communication, speaking, and language skills. A significant component of the semester will be collaborating with other students in the class. Real world skills are incorporated into the work we do, which is why it is so important for students to learn how to collaborate and communicate with one another.
Another large component of this class will be writing. We will be crafting essays and walking through the writing process. As well as organized writing, we will be creating and understanding poetry. This allows students to express themselves while also growing their ELA skills.
What texts will we be reading?

This novel is set in Auschwitz and is an autobiography of his own accounts in a concentration camp during The Holocaust. This novel explores main ideas of silence, family, and identity.
Second semester we will begin by reading various forms of poetry written anywhere from the 18th century to today. Then, we will be reading articles that focus around research based topics. Finally, we will be reading Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. This play is set in Verona in 1591. Main ideas in this play include fate, family, free will, etc.
