Babylonian was a region in central-southern Mesopotamia (today the countries of Iraq and Syria), between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The Babylonian empire was the last of the great Mesopotamian empires to be ruled by monarchs native to Mesopotamia. It was a small region but greatly expanded during the kingdom of Hammurabi. Babylonian became a major military power under Amorite king Hammurabi, who ruled from 1792 to 1750 BC. Hammurabi turned Babylonian into a rich, powerful and influential city.
Babylon was the capital of Babylonian. 3,500 years ago, Babylon was a massive walled city with networks of canals and vivid green crops. Its god was Marduk chosen by king Hammurabi. Hammurabi had a code law. Thanks to the code law the city thrived. Although it was a large and crowded city, it remained calm and peaceful because of Hammurabi's code of law. Due to its central geographic location, situated between cities to the north and cities to the south, Babylon became a center for trade and the city prospered. There was much to buy like fruits, vegetables, jewelry, clothes, etc.
In Babylonian they spoke Akkadian. They also spoke Sumerian and Aramaic. Ancient Sumerians invented a written language called cuneiform. Cuneiform started as pictographs which represented objects and ideas. Soon after they started using symbols instead of pictures. The written language is so important to us because thanks to it we know a great deal about ancient Mesopotamia civilization. The religion of Babylonian was polytheistic (believing in more than one god). They worshiped 2,100 gods. The gods ruled every aspect of their lives and there were gods for everything, for example there was a god of rain and storm and a god of water, etc. (CB)
