One word to describe Mesopotamia religion is polytheistic, meaning worshiping more than one major god and many major minor gods. Mesopotamia worshiped eight major gods Anu, Ea, Enlil, Enki, Ninhursag, Nanna, Utu, Inanna and Shamash. Anu the sky god, Ea the god of water, and Enlil the god of earth, storms and agriculture and the controller of fates. Shamash the god of the sun, Enki the god of wisdom and magic, Ninhursag the Sumerian Mother Goddess and one of the oldest and most important in the Mesopotamian Pantheon. Nanna the god of the moon, Utu the god of the sun and divine justice, Inanna the god of love, beauty, war, justice and political power. These gods were the main gods. While gods like Nergal the god of Plague and War, Ninurta the God of War, Hunting, Agriculture, and Scribes, and Gibil the god of fire are just some of the many many minor gods. Even though there was the major gods there were also patron gods such as Marduk. He is one of the most common patron god. He is the patron god of Babylon. Every city though has its own patron god those patron gods were the most important god for that city. In Mesopotamia priests were there main connection to gods. People in Mesopotamia had gods for everything from sun, to food and health. The priest were the connection between the gods. They were the kings of Mesopotamia because of their connection to god. They worshiped many gods and goddesses. Mesopotamians had something called prayer statues. The priests each had their own prayer statue of themselves praying. It was to be carried to the gods presence when they themselves were not there. They built these so that when they were not there their spirit would be there instead. The Mesopotamians prayed something like "praise to god and then a request", or just "praise the god". Individual Mesopotamians were supposed to pray daily to deities of their choice and honor them with sacrifices, hymns and incense offerings. gods in Mesopotamia were one of the most important parts of life.
