Course Description: Students in English 11 will read works of selected American authors of short stories, novels, plays, poetry, and non-fiction. In addition to American authors, students may read authors from outside the United States. Students will read to broaden their literary background and to develop more sophisticated reading skills. These readings form the foundation for the writing component of the course. Students are coached in the writing process through the use of note-taking, exemplars, and rubrics to produce polished drafts in a variety of modes: expository, persuasive, and analytical. Students will draft a personal narrative that may become their college admission essay.Â
