Training
The CADES program introduces novel training methodologies to integrate research into education.
RTG graduate fellowships
Each year, three PhD students from the CADES program are selected, after a stiff competition, to receive generous RTG Fellowships. (The fellowship stipends are nationally pegged at $34,000 for 11 months.) The stipends provide the selected fellows with unparalleled opportunities to focus on their research.
2024-2025 Doctoral RTG Fellows:
Emily Bogle
Austin Nelson
Justin Valentine
2023-2024 Doctoral RTG Fellows:
Barry Fadness
Vicky Haney
Sam Reynolds
2022-2023 Doctoral RTG Fellows:
Vicky Haney
Sam Reynolds
Pieter VandenBerge
RTG undergraduate fellowships
Each year, three undergraduate students from the CADES program are selected for support for one summer focused on intensive undergraduate research.
2024 Undergraduate RTG Fellows:
Tamara Gratcheva
Esther Toobian
Bryttani Nieves
2023 Undergraduate RTG Fellows:
Tamara Gratcheva
Madison Ruff
Henry Hillebrandt
Bootcamps
In the CADES program, selected year-long course sequences are redesigned to reach the research frontier, so naturally, they are heavy on prerequisites. Each RTG PhD student is required to take at least two of them. Due to the diversity of topics, not all students are expected to have the prerequisites for these sequences. But students have the opportunity to gain a headstart on the prerequisities by joining our CADES Summer Bootcamps. Undergraduates are welcome to the bootcamps.
Summer 2024

Internships
External Internships of doctoral students:
Every CADES RTG PhD student is expected to go for at least two external internships. The RTG also supports selected undergraduates for external learning opportunities such as the ones provided by the Data Science Summer Institute at Lawrence Livermore National Lab. Recent internships:

community service
RTG trainees serve regional clients who bring real-world projects into our training. Selected PhD student and postdoc trainees provide consulting services in the CADES Lab together with interested faculty.
Undergraduate trainees have access to Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) at the REU Site “Computational Modeling Serving the City” directed by engineering faculty Christof Teuscher.
ENgagement in the discipline
We engage the RTG trainees in the practices of the profession, concerning both teaching and research aspects.
PhD students in the CADES program are expected to select a leader in the discipline from outside the university as their external advisor.
RTG trainees are expected to contribute meaningfully to the research enterprise and actively disseminate their contributions, evidenced by conference talks and co-authored publications.
RTG Graduate Fellows must complete at least one year of supervised teaching assignments.
RTG Postdoctoral Fellows are required to teach one course per term.
All CADES members are expected to participate in the RTG talks and other academic group events.
