Gerber Gear has been a large ResourceFULL Use supporter and an even larger leader in sustainability in Portland. Since 2014, Gerber Gear has diverted 349 tons of waste from landfill, reducing emissions by 1036 tons, with a cost savings of $50,000 annually. That's equivalent to to removing 200 cars from the road each year.
Annually, Gerber reuses 36 tons of cardboard, packaging materials, pallets, fiber cloth and plastic bags which reduced emissions by 107 tons. Furthermore, they saved $6000 and 285 tons of carbon by reusing 96 tons of glass beads and ceramic pellets and 68 tons of carbon via reuse of 23 tons of polyester knife sheaths.
In 2015, Portland International Airport and St. Vincent De Paul partnered up to find a reuse alternative for decommissioned baggage belts. The woven polyester fabric-rubber combination material provided a challenge in that recycling/breakdown into raw materials was nearly impossible. St. Vincent De Paul , with the assistance of Exceed Enterprise (an organization that employees adults with disabilities) converted the baggage belts into sleeping mats.
On top of providing engaging community enhancement work to disabled adults and improved standard of living to the less fortunate, this reuse alternative diverted over 300 lbs of material from landfill and prevented the release of over two tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That is equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by three acres of forest in one year!
