Phoebe Daurio earned her BA in Theatre from Whitman College and her MA TESOL from Portland State University. She has been teaching in the IELP since 2010. She enjoys teaching communication skills to help students improve their pronunciation, public speaking, discussion techniques, and conversation strategies. She likes hearing other people’s stories, listening to music, cooking, traveling, and being outside.
Linnea Spitzer earned her BA in Eastern European Studies and History from the University of Washington and her MA TESOL from Portland State University. She is currently studying for her Ed.D. in Post-secondary education at Portland State. Linnea has been teaching advanced writing in the IELP since 2009, where she has focused on how the practice of writing can help graduate students develop a scholarly identity. In 2013, she was a recipient of the John Eliot Allen Outstanding Teacher Award, and in 2016 she was awarded IELP Instructor of the Year. In her life outside of work, Linnea enjoys reading, playing music, and being outdoors.
Della Abrahams is a Senior Instructor 1 and has been with the IELP since 2011. Prior to that, she taught English in Ecuador and Argentina. She has a Masters in TESOL from Portland State University and a Bachelors of Sociology from Northern Arizona University. Her areas of interest include intercultural competency, refugee support and resettlement and the intersection of language and global conflict resolution. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, playing outside and traveling.
Errin Beck is a Senior Instructor II and the current Assessment and Curriculum Coordinator of the Intensive English Language Program at Portland State University (PSU). Her research interests include vocabulary acquisition and alternative and self-assessment instruments. Her teaching interests focus on reading, writing, and grammar instruction at advanced levels. Errin has taught ESL since 2001 and has lived in Germany and Italy. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in German Language and Literature from Boston University and a Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from PSU.
Gwen Heller Tuason is honored and delighted to be teaching in the IELP Summer Fulbright Program. She has been teaching ESL at Portland State University since 2003. She double-majored in International Studies and English at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and earned her MA TESOL from Portland State University. She was a recipient of the John Eliot Allen Outstanding Teacher Award in 2009. Gwen’s hobbies include political activism, cooking new gluten-free recipes, and traveling around the US with her husband and ten-year old son.
Miranda Novash received her BA in German in 1995 and her Masters in TESOL in 2003. Her primary teaching interests are research writing, English grammar, and pronunciation, and her professional interests include curriculum design, assessment practices, Universal Design for Learning, and the cultural aspects of university writing practices. She has been recognized through several awards, including the John Elliot Outstanding Teacher Award in 2012. She is very pleased to be joining the Fulbright Summer Program.
Grace Lee received a BA in Classics with a double minor in Italian and European Studies from the University of Oregon and recently graduated from PSU with a MA in TESOL. She grew up in Lake Oswego, a small suburb right outside Portland, but has lived in Portland for 6 years now and loves the city life. She truly enjoys learning new languages, as can be seen during her undergraduate years when she studied Italian, French, Latin, and Ancient Greek. Currently, she is attempting to learn Korean and one day wants to live in South Korea. Her main hobbies include reading sci-fi/fantasy books, watching Korean dramas, playing Mario Kart, going to the shooting range for archery, baking, and bothering her very spoiled and very fat cat, Clive.
Rasnia Tabpla is a Ph.D. student in Technology Management, PSU. She has a B.Sc. in Chemistry and two M.Sc.; one in Chemistry and the other one in Engineering and Technology Management. She is from Thailand, a country at the center of Southeast Asia. She speaks Thai as her native language and English. Rasnia has lived in Portland for more than three years. She loves travelling and exploring cities including nature. She has visited many wonderful places in Oregon and other cities and states like New York, Boston, D.C., California, Arizona, Nevada, etc. Oregon has changed her life style from an inactive person to being a better person who loves playing volleyball, doing outdoor activities and road trips, and trying things she has never done. The best thing is to meet new amazing people from those activities.
Julie Haun is the IELP Director at Portland State University and has worked in the program since 1995. She started as an instructor and focused on preparing students to succeed in their university writing assignments. She is the co-author of Sourcework: Academic Writing from Sources which is in its second edition. She also worked as an IELP academic advisor for four years working specifically with students transitioning from the IELP to their degree programs. She has been serving as the IELP director for four years. In her free time, Julie loves to be with her family, cook, and explore Portland.
Sheila Mullooly is the IELP Learning Center Manager. She has taught ESL/EFL since 1995 and been active in IEP program administration since 2007. Sheila was awarded a Cambridge C.E.L.T.A. in 1998 and completed her MA TESOL Studies at the University of Queensland Australia in 2005. Sheila has also been a certified IELTS examiner since 2006. In 2009 she was the recipient of the ORTESOL Action Research Grant. As a US Department of State English Language Teaching Specialist, Sheila traveled to Burma, South Korea, Sudan, and South Sudan for short-term grant work on Autonomous Learning, Creative and Critical Approaches to Using the Internet in the EFL Classroom, and Self-Access Centers. Sheila's passions include speaking German/Swiss-German as often as possible, yoga, Nia, nature, and art. In Fall 2017, she began her doctoral studies in post-secondary educational leadership at Portland State University.
