Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Archaeologist

After many rewarding years as a Graphic Designer I decided to take up archaeology. I attended Portland State University (PSU), graduating with a BA in Anthropology in 2003. My primary archaeological interest is the historical period, so when PSU added classes reflecting this focus I returned and obtained a MA in 2012. My thesis project included historical research, methods research, and two field seasons as the PSU Supervisor for the annual joint PSU/WSU Public Archaeology Field Schools. During those two field seasons we excavated at the site of the ca. 1829 to 1860 Hudson’s Bay Company Fort Vancouver formal garden. Cultural Landscapes continue to be a great interest of mine.

I first started with the National Park Service as a volunteer at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site (FOVA) in 2000. After obtaining my BA, I worked on Cultural Resources Management projects for private companies. While completing my MA, I worked part-time at FOVA as a Research Assistant. I was converted to a full-time position in 2009. As an archeologist for the NPS, I have worked in many of the parks in the Pacific West Region for short term projects, while FOVA continues to be my Duty Station. Currently I am a Section 106 Coordinator, Laboratory Director, and Cultural Resources Division Volunteer Supervisor for FOVA. I also

volunteer for the park as the Supervisor for the Military Saber Training Program.

On a personal note, I enjoy biking, archery, sword fighting, reading (history, science fiction and fantasy), Lego, and spending time with my family.
