March 1969: In wake of a call for nationhood, the 1st Chicano Youth Liberation Conference was organized by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales in Denver, CO. Here, the term ‘Chicanismo’ was coined & a manifesto plan was made: El Plan de Aztlan (EPA).
The Significance of El Plan de Santa Barbara
Fundamental principles of the start of MEChA are found in EPSB
The EPSB Manifesto sees self-determination for the Chicanx community as the only acceptable way for our people to gain socioeconomic justice
Stresses that in organizing MEChA, every opportunity must be taken to educate our communities
EPSB exhorts Mechistas to preserve Chicanx culture in this culturally diverse society, both in the community and on campus
