What does it mean to queer geography? How do we discuss the influence of gender, sex, and sexuality on the creation of place and movement across the landscape? In what ways does gender and sexuality intersect with our numerous cultural identities to influence our experiences? We will examine all these questions and more in a four part presentation on queering geography education and incorporating the new Ethnic Studies informed Social Science standards in our classrooms.
In part one, we will find shared meaning in our language around queerness, gender, and sexuality. In part two, we will review a lesson outline exploring gender-diverse cultures around the world. In part three, we will examine the themes of geography and opportunities for queering the many sub-fields of geographic study. Part four highlights additional teaching and learning resources, as well as support for our LGBTQIA2SP+ students (and yes, we will define that acronym, too :D).
