What is general learning strategies?
Learning strategies is a course that helps students develop and improve skills necessary for academic success. These may include:
organization skills
time management skills
prioritizing skills
study skills
literacy skills
computer skills
It's a great course for students that need a little help with their transition to secondary school from grade 8 or transition between grades.
Who can take general learning strategies?
Learning strategies (GLE 1O & GLE 2O) can be taken by students that are identified as exceptional through the IPRC (with an IEP)
Students with an IEP can take GLE throughout high school
GLE 1O, GLE 2O, GLE 3O, and GLE 4O
Students with a non-identified IEP may also take GLE 1O/2O/3O/4O, if GLS is not offered
Do I get a credit if I take learning strategies?
Yes, if you complete your term and summative work, then you may earn the credit (1.0)
Is learning strategies a homework course?
Learning strategies has it's own curriculum expectations, so there are assignments to complete
Students are encouraged to practice and apply their time management and prioritization skills, so many students are able to complete their homework and GLE work
Can learning strategies be used as a substitute credit?
If the principal approves, then GLE and GLS may be used as a substitute for a mandatory credit such as grade 9 French
GLE is generally not used as a physical education substitute because there is a grade 11 health course that can be completed through independent learning or eLearning
GLE and GLS can also be taken as an elective (i.e. not used to substitute any other credit)
Can I take GLE1O and GLS1O to earn 2 credits?
No, both are grade 9 learning strategies course codes so only 1 credit is granted
How many learning strategies courses can I take?
Students with an IEP can earn up to 4 credits through learning strategies
for example, a student that takes GLE1O and GLE3O will earn 1 credit for each course (2 credits total)
Students with a non-identified IEP can also earn up to 4 credits through learning strategies (as of 2020-2021)
Students with a Student Growth Plan (SGP) can earn up to 2 credits through learning strategies (GLS1O and GLS4O)(as of 2025)
Can I fail learning strategies?
If a student's work doesn't meet the curriculum expectations or if a student doesn't submit any work, then he/she/they may be unsuccessful & not earn the credit
