Why should students get less homework?

June 4, 2022When I get back from school, the first thing I think about is all the homework I need to finish. By the time I'm halfway done, I already have to eat dinner, and that leaves even less time for me to finish my homework and other activities such as playing games, practising my piano, and going outside with my friends. I don’t think we should have too much homework because there is less time to do other things, it causes stress for most students, it really has no benefit, and it used to be used as a punishment.
Homework causes stress for many students. If a student only has one or two days to finish something, it causes stress because they know they have to get it done in that time. Stress can lead to anxiety problems. Stress can also form when students stay up late just to complete an assignment, which causes less sleep and the next day at school you're tired. Although work is important, mental health is always first.
You may think homework benefits students since it's extra practice, but sometimes the homework won’t help. When students know this is due soon, they rush it to get other things done such as chores and you won’t pick up as much information as you would have if you're not rushing. Another thing is that the test is almost always harder than the homework that the teacher assigned, which means the homework won’t help as much as it should. Since we already get six hours of learning at school, more work when we get home is overwhelming and a lot to do. Students should spend their time at home doing what they like to do.
Homework actually used to be used to punish students. A teacher named “Roberto Nevilis” came up with homework for students who were rude to their teachers or were lazy in class. When more teachers learned about homework, they started assigning it a lot more and it became normal for students to get assigned homework every day. To think that homework used to just be used to punish students and now we get it regardless.
When a test is coming up, homework is good because it does help with tests. Instead of just doing your classwork, homework is good for extra help if you need it. Another thing is, when you get homework a lot you learn to do better with time because you know you have to do other things than just the homework your teacher gave you.
In conclusion, even though everyone will have their own opinion, if school isn’t a place for sleeping, then home is not a place for schoolwork.
