Brampton, Canada—This is a story about my mom and dad, their struggles and their experiences in Canada. My dad told me he did not really think about moving to Canada at first. My mom did not come with him at first because I was very young and my dad had to earn enough money to make a living for us.
When my dad came to Canada, he had a good experience and met new friends. “It was very exciting in the beginning, as you get to meet new people ... kind people and nice support from the community for the newcomers,” my dad said.
Back in India, my mom was working for the government and had a maid, so my mom did not have to worry about me. Back in Canada, to my surprise, my dad was not used to the cold temperature, even though lived in the U.S.A. For two years. In the U.S.A., it was somewhat warmer than in Canada, and in Canada, it was much colder and much more snow fell.
As soon as my dad got off the plane in Toronto, he looked for work. “I never went to any university here”, he said. “I applied for jobs in IT services after landing and started getting interviews with various recruiters.''
My dad’s first job was at a major telecom company in their IT department as senior quality assurance.
“In this current state, I work in CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) as a quality assurance analyst. My kids have been enrolled in kindergarten and middle school,” he said.
When I was merely 4-5 years old, my mom and I came to Canada. When my dad had the resources to help us establish a life in Canada, we moved here. After a few months of settling in, my mom gave birth to my sister.
When I asked my dad what advice he had for coming to Canada, he said “Apply for a job to make a living, connect with the community and start doing volunteer work. Ensure that you are ready to travel to a location when you land the job. Be kind and respectful. Obey all the local laws and learn more about Canada and its communities.”
