February 26, 2021Brampton, Canada—Sharan K. is a new immigrant that arrived in Brampton, Canada with her family in 2002. She has been in Canada for a long time, about 19 years. Sharan is originally from Punjab, India, where Punjabi is spoken. Sharan had no problems speaking English. After a few months, she found a job in a factory.
I asked Sharan why she chose Canada. “My family left India and came to Canada because here in Canada, there are more facilities and a better future for our kids.”
Sharan has an older sister and brother-in-law living in Canada who sponsored them, which made it easier for Sharan because she had a family to provide help and advice when she needed it. They had been living in Canada long before she arrived
I asked Sharan if she faced any struggles. “It was a good new experience for me and there were different laws here than in my home country, so it took me a while to fit in here. Once I came to Canada with my family, we did not have time for education because we were new and needed money," Sharan explained. “The only thing that I regret is that I did not do further education.”
Sharan had two jobs at the airport in two different companies at the beginning of her career. She did the jobs with her two sisters and her sister-in-law, which helped her a lot.
“When I first came to Canada I was excited to see this much snow because where I was from it did not snow .”
Sharan was fascinated at first, but as time passed that fascination decreased because she did not like the snow. Sometimes she would get to work late because of the winters in Canada. But as time passed, Sharan adapted to the winter.
When she first came to Canada, she was hesitant at first because she was not sure if she made the right decision. But now, Sharan has no regrets.
“I have no regrets, I am happy with my husband and kids.” She said her children have a safe life with a good education.
Currently, she is not working because she is home taking care of her kids, but she is thinking of getting a new job once her family moves in June.
