PDO School Newsletter
13th November 2024
Dear Parents
We are all looking forward to the Oman National Day next week with several events planned for the 18th. An International Mindset is an important part of the IPC + IEYC and we want all our children to have a clear and well developed understanding of different cultures. Many thanks to all our staff in school who have spent significant time in preparation of this event.
You will see below the information on the parent board representatives, I would like to thank all three candidates who have volunteered. We see several examples of this on a daily basis with all our parent community wanting to help and make a positive difference to our school. A reminder that the voting form will be open on Sunday.
Several of our teachers will be attending the ISCO conference on Friday at ABA. This will be an opportunity for staff to collaborate with other teachers in Muscat. Several of our teachers are also making presentations highlighting several elements of learning at PDO School.

Early Years
Nursery rhymes play a crucial role in language development by stimulating the brain through rhythm and repetition. As Martin Skelton explains, these activities enhance memory, vocabulary and communication, while also building social connections and inclusion. Rhythmic patterns, like those in "Incy Wincy Spider," help children improve their listening skills and understanding of sounds.

To kick off Nursery Rhyme Week, we started with 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,' using Makaton signing, which supported language development and encouraged empathy and global-mindedness. We also sang "Incy Wincy Spider" and practised cutting out spider legs, which helped develop fine motor skills. Outside, children drew stars, with some making wishes, sparking creativity. For maths, we used stars to create addition sentences. These activities strengthened language and maths skills while promoting playful learning and imagination. As Martin Skelton highlights, “As children engage in rhythmic play, they not only learn language but also develop critical thinking, social skills and emotional understanding; tools they will carry throughout life.”

Year 2 not only learned a new poem this week but also learned it in Irish! Ms Ruth joined Year 2 to teach children the Irish nursery rhyme, Lamh Lamh Eile, which is about the parts of the body. It was so much fun learning a new language and the actions to it. Mr Scott, then surprised children with a poem he had written about the talented members of Y2H. Thank you both for making our Poetry Week so special.

Poetry in Motion: Year 3 & 4 Bring Words to Life During Poetry Week!
Our Year 3 & 4 children have been immersed in a range of fantastic poetry focused activities this week from poetry tasting at our Poetry Cafe, to writing their own poetry and performing the poetry of others. They have shown great resilience when performing and developed their communication skills through talking and listening. The use of our ‘mini stage’ helped the children to understand the role of the audience and the performer. It was wonderful to see the children’s interest in poetry leading them to choosing poetry books from the library and sharing poems with others. We are excited to lead this learning into our next IPC unit: Beautiful Oman, which will involve the children writing a poem inspired by Kit Wright’s Magic Box but with an Omani twist
