Dew drops glisten off the tips of the grass as the morning sun begins to peak over the tops of the trees. Students prepare their animals for the excitement the day is about to bring. As they hear the tractors roar over the hill they know their tiny audience is on their way. The cows begin to moo and even the chickens add in a cock-a-doodle-doo.
On October 12th, the Perryville FFA Chapter invited the PES 1-3 graders, functional skills classroom, and parents as teachers to be a part of Fall Harvest. During Fall Harvest our members advocate our local school about agriculture and how important it is to Perry County. Perryville FFA Agriculture Advisor, Miss Neislein, says, “Fall Harvest has been a long time tradition here for Perryville FFA. Some older members may even remember the name being Food for America. Regardless, we are still giving the opportunities to these high school FFA members to step out of the role as a student, and step into the shoes of an educator. Most of my students are no longer from the farm. They are human beings who live here in town, and have somehow grown to have a fondness for the association to agriculture, one of our county’s biggest economic values. Ag class is no long just sows, plows and cows.”
When asked about the benefits to her students, 2nd grade PES teacher Valerie Stueve responded, “FFA Fall harvest is a great learning experience for our elementary students. They get close up experiences with the animals and learn about where their food comes from and what the farm animals eat. One of the best experiences for the kids is seeing the older students teaching them. It gives them something to look forward to and a goal to set for when they are in high school. Many of the students said that they want to be an FFA member someday so that they can learn to drive the skid steer!”

Fair time is the time to be a Perryville FFA member. Over the last two weeks our members have taken part in the SEMO District Fair and the East Perry Fair. Between the fairs we had over 100 crop and livestock entries. We also participated in the East Perry Fair Parade with the float theme” Perryville Salutes Farmers and Agriculturalist.” Our floats were covered with red, white, and blue and so were our members. “Being apart of the fairs we come to together as a community,” says Madison Moll, “This is a time to show our pride in where we come from and what we do for agriculture. A time to show those who have little to no knowledge of what we do, how we do it and what we contribute to our world. This is why fair time is so important as it brings us together for our one shared commonality, our love for agriculture.”

We are fortunate enough to have many sponsors that support us throughout the year with donations. Buchheit is one of those. They have helped us tremendously throughout the years and it is not unrecognized. Without sponsors, like Buchheit, we would not be able to experience FFA . To show our appreciation we took part in a promotion for donations to our chapter. This year they visited our chapter and asked some of our students how FFA has helped or impacted their lives.
