India is known for its Ayurvedic medical system. Medicinal plants are extensively used in Indian Ayurveda for providing cures to different ailments or diseases. It is important that people can easily identify the leaf and get to know its benefits.
My UG students Ms. Divya (2020-2021), Ms. Bhargavi (2020-2021), and Mr. Niranjan (2020-2021) are working with me on identifying Indian medicinal leaves. We have developed a system that helps a naive user to recognize the plant leaf and provides the user with its benefits and medicinal values. Convolution Neural network were used to identify the plant leaf.
Before the rise in modern medicine, India was known for its Ayurvedic medical system. Ayurvedic medicines were naturally found and prepared by Ayurvedic doctors or Vaidya as known in the native language. Earlier, people had the knowledge and were able to easily identify medicinal plants. Today, the naïve users are unaware of the rich Ayurveda that India holds. Therefore, using various technologies like Machine Learning, Classification, others a model can be implemented to recognize the leaves and provide their medicinal values. The aim behind using leaf and not roots, stem, branch, or other parts for plant identification is because of its availability, easy accessibility, and also it holds many properties that turn out to be useful for the identification system using Machine Learning. This system consists of 16 plant leaves. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model is used for image identification. The model extracts the features from images and identifies the leaf. After that, the system displays the information about the leaf - common name, botanical name, chemical compositions, benefits, and diseases that can be cured.
