This class will use contract grading. Contract grading emphasizes and recognizes your effort—the labor you put into assignments. The goal is for you to have control over your time and effort, so that you can effectively manage your time to achieve the grade you want in the class. The other goal is to make the writing process, metacognition and reflection, and a growth mindset more important than the final numbers at the end of the term.
For each major assignment, you will submit a reflection. This helps you to assess your own labor on each assignment, and helps us see the work you’ve put into it.
For each assignment, you will receive:
Lots of feedback, usually written, sometimes via voice memo, email, or D2L comments
A grade of PASS (P) or Revise and Resubmit (RR)
If you receive a grade of RR, we will let you know specifically what you can do to revise it to make it a PASS
At that point, you can choose whether you want to revise and resubmit the assignment to get a PASS grade.
Students enrolled in IRW 90 do not need to complete every assignment in order to get an A. Optional assignments for IRW 90 students are marked with a star * in the grading contract.
That said: students who are enrolled in IRW90 and do complete all the work for IRW115 are eligible to accelerate past 115 level and complete WR121 in the next term.
Here are some of the assignments we will have in the class:
Every week, we will read several chapter of the book and/or an essay. You are expected to keep up with the readings on your own. Audiobooks are great!
You will contribute to a weekly in-class discussion on our readings in class.
You will reflect on your reading, think about your habits and processes as a reader, and make predictions about what's next in your weekly log.
You will learn vocabulary and take short quizzes on what you learn. You can take a quiz 3 times; only the highest score counts.
You will tell a story about yourself to a particular audience.
You will create a question, then research it with academic sources at the PCC library.
