Topic: Metrology cont'd & Exam I
Read pages 104 - 107 in lab manual.
Review lectures slides on volume measurement (posted in D2L Week 3 Content).
Read textbook pages 443 - 466. (Important!)
No new references for this week.
Review the technique demonstration videos from Week 2 references, especially for any devices in which your measurements resulted in accuracy and/or precision below instrument specifications.
None for this week.
Refer to the "Additional Practice" activities posted in week 2 and continue practice as needed.
Be able to use top-loading balances, analytical balances, graduated cylinders, serological pipettes, and micropipettes for weight and volume measurements with appropriate accuracy and precision.
Complete the Gravimetric Analysis activity.
Finish taking all volume and weight measurements.
Use the Calculation Template (D2L, Week 3 Content) to calculate the accuracy and precision of your measurements.
Know how to calculate percent error (accuracy) and average absolute deviation (precision) for measurements.
Use spreadsheets with formulas (like the template provided) when crunching larger data sets.
The entire lab period on Day 3 will be dedicated to Exam I.
The exam includes a written component that covers the concepts and activities from the first three weeks of the class, and a practical (hands-on) component that covers the measurements, equipment use, and documentation that we learned so far.
No technique demonstration this week.
Use the Class Data link (D2L, Week 3 Content) to share a subset of your data from the gravimetric analysis activity.
Entries #4 is to be completed this week.
No additional practice activities for this week.
We will begin a new section of the class on the topic of pH, buffers, and solutions.
There are no assignments due before the next class.
