The Outreach and Advocacy Project conducted a workshop with Heather Kalowsky's Level 7 Reading class on gender-based violence as part of The Illumination Project. Then, their student educators gave a short interactive play on sexual harassment. Below are two student reflections:
In the Illumination Project, the plays used short stories to portray violence. In these stories, they didn’t give us answers. Instead, we replayed the scenes, exploring different ways to solve the problems. Our classmates joined in by standing on stage and demonstrating positive ways to face these challenges. These activities made us feel empowered and prepared when we encounter different kinds of violence. I believe the Illumination Project can change our perspective by helping us recognize violent behaviors that make us uncomfortable. When we discuss these issues with classmates, they provide helpful viewpoints that encourage us to reflect. I think the Illumination Project is an effective form of education.

The Illumination Project taught us about gender-based violence and how it affects people. We watched a play with different stories showing things like sexual harassment. Then, we tried replaying the scenes to find better ways to respond. Some classmates even went on stage to show their ideas. This experience helped us feel more ready to handle gender-based violence if we ever see it or face it ourselves.
Watching the Illumination Project made me think a lot. I learned that it’s important to speak up and help others when we see something wrong. This experience showed me that even small actions can make a difference. I feel more confident now about what to do if I see someone in trouble.
