In October, ESOL level 2 students had the opportunity to meet with artists Mona Huneidi and Mohammed Usrof to learn how to make kites. The artists' exhibit in the North Art Gallery at Sylvania included more than 100 handmade kites, and it was inspired by the poem "If I must Die" by the Palestinian academic and writer Refaat Alaeer. ESOL Level 2 students created beautiful kites together during the event.
My First Day in the United States
My first day in the United States was very scary because I didn’t know anyone. I arrived in Portland, Oregon, on February 23, 2022. The next day, I went to downtown Portland and I saw everything like in the movies - the streets, the buildings, and the people. I ate a burger and drank coffee at McDonald’s, but I felt very tired. The end.

My first day in the United States was exciting. I came in May, 2023, with my family, to the Los Angeles Airport. I was lost. The airport was crowded. It was crazy! At one moment, I felt very hungry. I ate a fast food hamburger with fries and drank water - not coke! After lunch, I took a flight to Seattle. I was very tired. I missed Chilean food. Later, I went to Tigard, Oregon. Now I’m here.

Writing about School Days
I went to school in Kaping, China where I was born. I went to school for 10 years in my country: 1 year of preschool, 6 years of primary school, and three years of middle school. The subjects I like are history and culture. I don’t like long class hours and too much homework. The class atmosphere in the United States is more relaxed, while classes in my country are more serious. The same thing is that there is also homework.

My school was in Vietnam. I studied for 9 years. I don’t remember clearly but I really liked it there because I went to school with my best friends. I didn’t like studying in Vietnam because it wasn’t interesting to me. In the U.S., everything is different because I get to learn English and have many friends from many countries.
