Here are various types of assignments commonly found in an open pedagogy course at the community college level. Students have the flexibility to choose and combine these assignments based on their preferred learning style and individual preferences. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and has some assignments you will see in a program specific for addiction counseling:
Essays: Students can write essays on diverse topics, expressing their ideas and/or arguments.
Projects: Engaging in hands-on projects that allow students to explore and create in their areas of interest.
Presentations: Designing and delivering demonstrations on addiction-related subjects to increase awareness, share knowledge, provide research or relate curriculum to personal experiences.
Cultural competence exercises: Exploring diverse cultural perspectives and learning and/or creating best practices to provide addiction counseling that is intended to increase belonging, inclusion, collaboration and a welcoming environment for clients' from various racial, ethnic and/or cultural backgrounds.
Collaborative work: Engaging in group projects or discussions to foster teamwork and collective learning.
Digital media creation: Creating videos, podcasts, or other multimedia content to convey information or tell stories.
Research papers: Conducting research on specific subjects and presenting their findings in a relatable format to enhance understanding and inform counseling practices .
Reflection papers or journals: Writing papers or maintaining personal journals to reflect on learning experiences, progress, and insights gained during the counseling program.
Open educational resources (OER): Creating or curating open educational resources to share with others.
Community engagement: Participating in community-based activities or service-learning projects related to course content.
Critical analyses: Analyzing texts, artworks, or real-world phenomena to develop critical thinking and analytical skills.
Peer reviews: Providing feedback and constructive criticism on classmates' work to enhance learning and collaboration.
Online discussions: Participating in online forums or discussion boards to exchange ideas and perspectives.
Self-paced learning modules: Designing self-paced modules to guide personal learning journeys and exploration of topics.
Digital portfolios: Creating digital portfolios to showcase and reflect on their learning achievements and growth.

Relapse prevention plans: Creating customized plans to help a variety of clients. Plans may include but are not limited to identifying triggers, developing coping skills, and preventing a return to less desirable or helpful behaviors.
Addiction education materials: Designing educational materials, such as infosheets, brochures, presentations, or curriculum to raise awareness about addiction and its effects. Can be for various levels of social systems or for treatment centers, families, or other clinicians.
Counseling session recordings: Recording and reviewing counseling sessions to evaluate skills, techniques, and areas for improvement.
Assessments and screenings: Administering addiction assessments and screenings to gather information and inform treatment planning.
These assignment types can be adapted and combined based on students' preferences and learning styles, offering a diverse and customizable learning experience in the open pedagogy course.
