Question: Do I have to wear a speedo (the little underwear type swim wear for boys)?
Answer: No. You can wear “jammers” which are longer shorts type swimwear. They are form fitted to reduce drag in the water and to avoid tangling.
Question: I am not a great swimmer, can I still play?

Question: I’ve never played or even seen a water polo game, can I still come?
Answer: Yes! Patterson does not have a youth water polo program, so nearly all of our athletes come to the team having no idea how to play the game or what any of the rules are. We will teach you!
Question: Has anyone ever drowned? Will I drown? Will you let me drown?
Answer: No one will drown in either practice or a game. We have trained lifeguards on deck at all times AND many of the returning players are certified lifeguards. As a matter of fact, some of your teammates might miss practice to guard a practice every so often.
Question: Will chlorine ruin my hair?
Answer: Not likely. If you are concerned about it, rinse your hair in cool, fresh water before you get in the pool That will prevent your hair from absorbing the chlorinated water. Also, you will wear a swim cap that minimizes the amount of water on your hair.
Question: Do I really have to wear those ugly water polo caps?
Answer: Yes. Protective gear is necessary because water polo is a contact sport. That said, everyone is wearing the same type of cap, you will look “normal” on deck.
Question: Is water polo as aggressive as people say?
Answer: It can be. A lot of the aggressiveness of the game depends on how YOU conduct yourself. If you get grabby in a game then your opponent will grab you back. PHS staff believe in playing a “clean” game and do not condone “dirty” moves. Additionally, if the opposing team is playing rough, we have and are willing to address referees and opposing coaching staff about overly-aggressive playing.
Question: Do I have to keep my nails short?
Answer: Yes. During the season you must keep your finger and toe nails short. This is to avoid accidentally scratching someone. Referees check fingers and toes before each game.
