Art Lessons: Hardin Reynolds Memorial School
Depending on materials that you have at home, choose your paper and how you want to add color. You do not have to have white paper; be creative. You may also want to check out my Facebook page and the Patrick County Fine Arts Facebook page. You may substitute one of those lessons for one below. Even though a lesson may say it is for elementary students, you can use that idea and build on it to suit you. I have started handwriting and drawing lesson plans in a sketchbook, which I find more enjoyable than typing and using links on a computer. You will notice that I have a picture of my cat, Charlie, relaxing next to my art materials. Creating art while spending time with my cat brings me joy. I want this to be a fun, relaxing time for you also. This is a great opportunity for you to figure out what works best for you and how you want to express yourself.
Dessert Drawing: American artist Wayne Thiebaud is a famous pop artist. He has painted a variety of food paintings, such as cakes, pies, candy, ice cream, donuts and more. View the following slideshow about his paintings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAHuOkhvAhg
Create a dessert or candy drawing. Choose the point of view. Do you want it to be a top view or side view? Do you want a whole dessert or pieces, like slices of cake? Do you want one large drawing or rows? Your drawing needs to fill the space of the paper. Think about shapes: if you see more of a side view, the top of a cake or donut would be a narrow oval whereas a top view would be a circle. Add color, or designs with your choice of crayon, color pencil, markers or paint.

Zentangles: Zentangles are a type of art that anyone can do anywhere. You only need paper and a black pen or marker. You do not have to purchase anything special. My children and I have fond memories drawing on the paper covering the bed at the doctor’s office This helped us occupy time while waiting, it was also a good activity to do while waiting in the car for someone to finish up practice. Learn about zentangles by going to the following website: https://zentangle.com/pages/get-started
Zentangles are just doodles that incorporate using patterned lines and shapes. They can be very simple or very detailed. They can fit inside any type of drawing and can also be in color. You can watch tutorials by several artists creating zentangles on Youtube or google them and look at images. Give it a try and see where it takes you.
