One of my favorite ways to learn is by listening to podcasts. There are many entertaining podcasts you can listen to, but there are also ones that are filled with learning opportunities! My husband and I opened his clinic, wrote a business plan, applied for grants, and bought our first rental property solely off the learning we listened to from podcast episodes! Listening to podcasts is something you can do while working out, doing chores, or just sitting around...I love it because it is learning you can take anywhere with you! I was hoping to incorporate some podcast learning with you this year, so here are a few good ones for students. This is NOT required, but if you are looking for some good learning opportunities, browse through these podcasts to see if one interests you. A good challenge for yourself would be to then consider what the main point/message the speaker is trying to make. Being able to discern the central idea of a text/podcast/etc. is an important skill to have. Happy listening! Let me know if you listen to any good podcasts that I did not share here! - Mrs. Redenius

I'm not sure how much you've heard about the flu pandemic of 1918, but there are many similarities to what we are experiencing today...100 years later! The two resources below give you some good reading/viewing material that go over what happened in America during that time. Another idea for you to continue to work on your writing skills would be to keep a journal throughout all of this. Right now, you have the unique opportunity to actually be a part of a historical event. We are going to be talking about this flu pandemic for years to come. It might be interesting ten years from now to be able to look back on journals you wrote during this time. What did you do each day? How did you feel about all the closures? What does the news tell you each day? I bet you never thought you'd experience a time when stores were sold out of toilet paper! I encourage you to write down your experiences to look back on some day!
Here's a couple resources on the 1918 flu pandemic:

The remaining days that you are home, here are a few things you can work on if you'd like. These are all OPTIONAL! Nothing is required. These are all activities that can help you keep things we have been talking about in class in the forefront of your mind while you are away from school. Let me know if you ever have any questions, and again, nothing is required! -Mrs. Redenius

Another great option is to just read for fun! If you don't have books at home or access to a library, here is a great website that offers free online books to read https://readanybook.com/
Hi everyone! If you are looking for a few ideas for things you can work on this week, here are a few ideas (all of them are optional and are not required!)
* Check out Kahn Academy's online learning options...they have a course on grammar (https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/grammar) if you think your grammar could use some fine-tuning. They also have a course on story-telling (https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/hass-storytelling) that is fun to take if you'd like to work on creative writing. Another good class is on Entrepreneurship (https://www.khanacademy.org/college-careers-more/entrepreneurship2). That one does not directly relate to English class, but I think a lot of you would find it interesting!
* Continue to write down and journal your thoughts during your experience. You will be thankful you wrote down these memories years from now! I would also encourage you to start reflecting on your opinion of everything going on...do you agree with how our state has been handling this pandemic? Do you think we moved too slow in shutting things down? Do you think we should reopen things? Were they right in postponing the Olympics? What information are you using to form your opinions? This could be great practice in making sure the information you are reading comes from accurate and reliable sources! This is a great chance to gather all the information you can from the media, from the news you read online, from stories you hear, etc. and form your own opinion of it! ....and then write it all down!
* Continue to read for fun! Shoot for at least 20-30 minutes a day of reading for fun.
* Research one thing you could be doing to help out the community in this pandemic...and then go do it! For example, many people have started sewing hospital masks. My husband has a 3d printer and has been making splash guards for them! Maybe a neighbor would like someone to bring them groceries. Perhaps you have a grandparent that is in a nursing home facility and would like a letter from you, or a Facetime call. There are so many opportunities to help or to brighten someone's day during this time!
* There is a great writing competition coming up for high school sophomores. The first prize winner wins a free year of college at the University of Iowa (Go Hawks)! The rest of the winners win money! If this is something you'd be interested in doing, let me know, and I would love to help you! http://www.iowacityofliterature.org/paul-engle-essay-contest/
