Note:
"Girls and Boys of Heathfield Ever" (sung to Men of Harlech) became the final choice in th collection of songs that were being considered as THE school song. The words to this are written out at the end of this list.
HEATHFIELD SCHOOL SONGS
Copied from the 1958-1959 School Magazine
It is a healthy sign that there is strong feeling on the subject of the School Song. "Girls and Boys of Heathfield" is sung to "Men of Harlech" a tune we certainly cannot claim as ours. But custom dies hard and many feel affection for it. With the aim of finding a truly indigenous tune and words, we are trying to build up a small collection of The Songs, hoping that one of them will finally establish itself as The School Song. We are publishing here the words and names of the writers of those submitted so far. The School knows the tunes and we think enjoys singing them. Will one of these become established, or is THE School Song yet to be written.
Turn the Page
Kathleen Manne Mrs Manne
Refrain:
Turn the page of life’s book forward:
Minds are cast back to recall
Countless hours of happy girlhood
Heathfield, we thank you for them all!
Unfortunately we have lost the words of the verses and the splendid tune that we sang it to. Does anyone remember either the tune or the words?
We Are as One
Carol Scott and Jane Nenk Brian Scott
We are as one in work and play.
Work must be done, and so we pray
Give us charity that we may be
Abler with life to cope.
Heathfield we love for truth and honour;
Strength from above we ask, that our
School may always prosper day by day
In courage, faith and hope.

1. She conquers, she conquers, who conquers herself
And gladly prepares to obey;
Loving the pure, the good, the truth;
Learning the worth of service in youth
This is true freedom’s way.
2. Whatever our talents, though they may seem small
In all that we strive to attain
Though praise is rare, no prizes won.
May all know the joy of work well done,
For wisdom will yet remain.
3. We conquer, we conquer, who conquer ourselves,
By living and learning each day;
Worthy of those once here before,
Worthy when we are here no more,
For others to mark the way.
Steadfast and Loyal
Refrain: Elizabeth Grieve
Steadfast and loyal, friendly and true,
As we go on our way we sing;
Always rememb’ing the thanks that are due;
To Heathfield our praise we bring.
1. To conquer oneself is to conquer indeed,
Says the motto we gladly wear;
And the pride of our School in this golden rule
Is one we most justly may share.
2. Things that are easy, things that are cheap
We’ve learned not to value dear;
From the standard of truth we have held in our youth
Shall for ever shine out clear.
3. Wherever our paths in the future may lead,
Or whatever the work we do.
We’ll strive with our might to uphold what is right,
As we pledge our work anew.
Final refrain:
Steadfast and loyal, friendly and true,
We’ll sing as we go on our way;
And the years shall but strengthen the love that we bring
To the Heathfield we know to-day.
Note from web site author:
Heathfield used to take in some young boys in the infant school. From the age of 7, as a junior, these boys mostly went on to the several prep schools in the Harrow area.
The first line of the following song reads “Girls and boys of Heathfield ever” But in the early 60s, the intake of boys into St. Keverne stopped. The first line of the song was altered to read “All the girls of Heathfield ever’.
I believe that this song became THE school song for Heathfield. Here is the original version:
Girls and Boys of Heathfield
D. Manners Sung to Men of Harlech
1. Girls and boys of Heathfield ever
Strive for honour, truth and justice
Rung on rung of School’s bright ladder
Mounting, meaning work.
2. When our foes at sports show courage,
skill and swiftness ours surpassing,
We remember Heathfield’s message:
“Vincit qui se vincit”
3. Rear the lamp of hope hight.
Time nor chance extinguish.
A nobler zeal, a need we feel
The dower of life to cherish.
4. Onward! ’Tis our School that calls us,
Past are failures, ours the future.
Useful years of work most glorious.
Heathfield girls and boys.
