When does the band season start and end?

Band season officially starts with Band Camp, which is held the first week in August. Marching season runs through mid-December. In January, we transition to concert season, which is when we focus on concert music, festivals and a spring concert. Band wraps up in June when school ends. 

What is band camp, and why do I need to be there?

Band camp is a highlight of the year and kicks off our exciting marching season! It typically takes place during the first week of August, so be sure to mark your calendars early! For new students, it is the perfect introduction to marching - where you will learn the basics, get to know your section, and start building friendships that will last throughout high school. For returning students, it is a time to brush up on marching skills, dive into our new field show, rehearse, and reconnect. Band camp is more than just practice, it's where memories are made, traditions are passed on, and our band family grows stronger. Student attendance is essential, and we truly appreciate the support of our band families in making this a top priority each year. Should a student be unable to attend, please be aware that a marching readiness assessment will need to be passed prior to taking the field for football games and competitions.

Do I need my own instrument or equipment?

At PRHS, we're fortunate to have a collection of school-owned instruments that students may borrow and use while they're part of the band. If you have a burning desire to learn an instrument, band is the class for you! Interested in color guard instead? We've got flags, rifles, a color guard director and assistants, along with everything else you need to learn and perform with the team. 

Why are Wednesday night rehearsals so important? 

Our Wednesday evening rehearsals are the only time the entire band comes together as one full group. 

Here is why they matter: 

• During the school day, students are split between two different band periods, so we are never all in the same room together all at once. 

• Wednesday nights (5:30-9:00pm) are when we rehearse as a full ensemble, whether we're on the field running our show or practicing parade marching. 

These rehearsals are not only essential for our performanc success - they're also a lot of fun! It's where the music comes alive, friendships grow, and we build the teamwork that makes our band great. Since Wednesday nights are the only full group practices, they are extra important, and we appreciate everyone making them a top priority. 

What should students wear to rehearsals? 

For rehearsals, students should wear comfortable clothes they can move in. Closed-toed, supportive shoes are a must, and athletic shoes (sneakers, trainers, etc.) are highly recommended. For outdoor rehearsals (like Band Camp), sunscreen, hats, and even sunglasses are helpful too. Also, please be aware that by October, our nighttime temperatures are beginning to dip and it's very common to need a jacket, hoodie, or both for evening rehearsals. 

Are rehearsals and performances mandatory? 

Yes. At PRHS, band is a class. Attendance is essential. Rehearsals and performances are the equivalent of assignments, projects, and tests. If you are part of the band, we hope you're excited to show up, contribute, and perform - that's what being in a team is all about! A better question to ask might be, "Why wouldn't I want to be there?"

How do students get to competitions and events?

For many off-campus performances (competitions, parades, events), school buses are provided. For events where parent transportation is needed, we clearly communicate in advance with parents and provide details about call (check-in) times, and any needed forms. 

What about color guard? 

Our color guard is directed by Emily Plale. Once school begins, there will be a rehearsal just for color guard members on Mondays from 3:30-5:30, and they also rehearse with the band on Wednesday evenings. If you have specific questions regarding color guard, please reach out to Emily directly and she'll happily share color guard program details. 

Is there a cost to be in band? 

Good news - there is no cost to participate in band at PRHS! That said, running a high-quality music program takes significant resources. From uniforms and instruments to transportation, event fees, and equipment maintenance, there are many behind-the-scenes costs that make our band experience possible. We do ask that each student pay for their own shoes, and that way no one has to face the undeniable disgust of wearing someone else's poorly treated shoes. They are yours to keep! Marching shoes are currently (2026) $45.00 for the pair, and if that presents a hardship to your family - please let Mr. Cera or Mrs. Rivera know. The inability to pay for shoes should never be a reason that a student cannot participate in band. We will work it out! 

That's where the incredible Band Backers come in! The PRHS Band Backers are a dedicated group of parent and community volunteers whose mission is to support the band and color guard through fundraising and hands-on help. They're the sole fundraising organization for the music program and help cover things like:

• Uniform maintenance

• Music and instrument upkeep

• Extra transportation and meals

• Some festival and competition fees

• Support staff, scholarships...and SO MUCH MORE.

How can parents be involved? 

We love and appreciate parent involvement! Here are a few great ways to help:

• Join the Band Backers - our amazing parent booster organization! 

• Support Band Backer fundraisers for the band, and help spread the word

• Attend our performances and events, and cheer on the band!

• Volunteer to help with uniforms, chaperoning, helping to get equipment to and from the field, meals, or even just working with other parents to create a special "spirit section" in the stands at competitions, parades, or football games. Parents, we need your help!
