The annual RYLA event is coming up soon for Punxsy students

By Madison Lorelli

Every year, the Punxsutawney Area High School gives rising seniors the opportunity to spend a week in Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA to attend the annual district 7280 RYLA event. This year, the event is going to be held from June 9th to June 14th. During the week you spend at the college, you learn leadership, social and professional skills. You also get the opportunity to meet new people and form lifelong friendships with the students you meet from other schools.

In order to be chosen to attend RYLA, junior students had to write an essay in order to win the scholarship that covers the price to attend. The essays are submitted to the principles of the school, who then chose the winners. The winners are chosen by our local Rotary Club. This year, there are four students who will be attending RYLA. The students who won are juniors, Abby Gigliotti, Grace Hall, Taegan Ludwig, Allie Doverspike, and Charli Smith.

RYLA is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program, which is a leadership experience for high schoolers that is provided by the Rotary Club. At this program, students from all over the world get the chance to learn many skills, including leadership and social skills that will stay with them forever. This program also lets you experience fun activities that allow you to make connections with helping out the world.

There are so many benefits that come along with attending RYLA. First of all, Rotary is an incredible organization that promotes peace, helps fight diseases, provides clean water and hygiene, helps mothers and their children, grows local economies, and helps support education for all ages. RYLA’s mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity, advance world understanding and goodwill, along with peace throughout our lives.

RYLA is an organization that is here to solve real world problems. They want to face these problems head on and be able to solve them or hopefully make them more positive with the help of students around the world.

This organization is targeted towards youth, as it is an award program that juniors attend. RYLA has a global network of over 1.2 million people who come together to take action and make the world a better place. RYLA is broken up into three parts; the Rotary clubs, Rotary International, and The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary clubs unite people who are determined to exchange ideas, form relationships, and take action to make the world a better place. Rotary International is the group of people who support the clubs and make everything happen. The Rotary Foundation is the group that helps out humanitarian services from local to global projects.

You can actually donate money online to the Rotary Foundation in order to help rebuild lives, give the power of lights to those who don’t have it, and help heal thousands of people who need the proper care.

The history of RYLA goes all the way back to 110 years ago. It started out as a small organization that one man by the name of Paul Harris started. His vision was to get people from different cultures to form together and help out their communities.

He wanted the people in the organization to form meaningful, lifelong friendships with the people they helped out with. Harris states, “Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”

The current president of Rotary International is Barry Rassin, who has a MBA in health and hospital administration and has always been someone who likes to help others whenever he gets the opportunity. The current trustee chair is Brenda Marie Cressey, who is the president and CEO of Office Support Systems. The general secretary is John Hewko, who has been with the organization since 2011 and is a charter member of the Rotary Club in Ukraine.

There are also other groups, including the executive staff, directors, trustees, and regional leaders. Rotary is led by a diverse and international team of executives who have committed their lives to serve and are dedicated to helping members form together and take action.

Even though RYLA and Rotary International has changed over the years, they still keep three main elements alive to this day. The first one is that they are an international organization. The second element is that the organization perseveres during tough times. The last key element that RYLA has kept over the years is that they are committed to service and are not afraid to dream big and set bold goals.

For those who are interested in joining Rotary International, they are always looking for people who are dedicated to helping others and want to see positive changes in the world. Rotary Clubs welcome Rotaractors, Rotary Peace Fellows, and other Rotary family members but most new members of Rotary are often invited to join by invitation.

There are many benefits to becoming a member in the Rotary family. For instance, you will be able to have a voice in discussions about your community’s needs, you will be able to connect with the other leaders and meet new people, you will be able to expand your leadership experience and skills, along with forming professional skills, and of course you will be able to form lifelong bonds with people from all over the world.

There are also many opportunities when you are a Rotary member. For instance, you could have a chance to win Rotary Global Rewards, to attend the Rotary International Convention, form Rotary Fellowships, and become a member of the Rotarian Action Group.

Becoming a club member only asks you for a few simple rules. You must pay club dues, attend the meetings and events, and of course, use your leadership and professional skills to make a difference. Another interesting part of Rotary is that if you are between the ages of 12 and 30, there are Rotaract and Interact clubs, which are service clubs for youth.

A great feature of becoming a member of Rotary is that it offers so many great careers to its members. There are careers in Communications, Club and District Support, Data Services, Enterprise Projects, Financial Services, Foundation Services, Marketing, Information Technology, and so many more.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program is unlike any other experience. It is an opportunity to better your leadership and social skills. If you are interested in attending RYLA in the future, you can get the chance to your junior year in high school. If you are looking to make a difference and change the world, then this organization is for you!
