Wind Ensemble is the top performing group for the Thompson Band program. This is the most visible and busiest ensemble in program carrying the bulk of the PR and recruiting duties as well as being a top competitive group in Pasadena ISD. Class meets daily, requires significant after school commitment and is by audition and invitation only. This class meets 5th period.
This is our second performing and competition band at Thompson. This group meets daily, requires after school commitment and performs at all major public concerts as well as UIL competition. Entry into the Symphonic Band is by audition only. This class meets 4th period.
This is our third performing and competition band at Thompson Intermediate. This group consistently competes at high levels and brings home awards, helping to set the standard for a sub-non varsity band in Pasadena ISD. Class meets daily and there is some after school commitment required, as well as public performances and UIL competition. This class meets 3rd period.
Cadet Band offers an opportunity for students to further their music skills in a guided practice setting. This class builds on the foundation set by their beginning band years and gets them ready to take their place in one of the competing ensembles. This class performs at the Christmas and Spring Concerts and students in Cadet Band are encouraged to participate in Football Band activities. This class meets 2nd period.
This is an entry level band class for students with no prior music experience that want to learn to play a woodwind or brass instrument. We start Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone although in some cases we do start other instruments. This class often carries a significant financial obligation and does 2 performances a year, one per semester. This class meets 1st period.
Mr. Lopez is starting his 21st year as a band director and 9th year as the Director of Bands at Thompson Intermediate. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Lamar University in Beaumont, TX in 2005, taught 2 years at Horace Mann Junior School in Baytown, TX as an assistant band director before moving up to Robert E. Lee HS as the assistant director. He spent 10 years at Lee where he taught Marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Ensemble. He came to Thompson in the fall of 2017 and has rebuilt the program through the total loss suffered from Hurricane Harvey to a consistent 1st Division UIL program. He lives in Humble with his wife Natalie, a former band director, and 5 children where he is the Associate Music Director at First Humble Methodist Church and leads the contemporary worship service. He is an active player in the Houston music scene as a lead vocalist, guitarist, and keyboard player where he fronts The Royal Dukes Band and the Sound Society Band for weddings and corporate events. He also enjoys the woodworking and the outdoors.
Mr. Anderson has been a band director for 16 years and is entering his 3rd year of teaching at Thompson Intermediate school. He is a graduate of the University of Texas along with schooling at New England Conservatory and UTRGV. His primary instrument is the French horn. He also taught at Donna MS/HS, LBJ MS, Lamar JH, Sugarland MS, Argyle MS, Sulphur Springs MS, and Coble MS.
Mr. Anderson is married to Melissa, who is also a band director, and has 4 children Joshua, Hannah, Sarah and Noah along with a dog and 2 cats. He enjoys spending time with his family as well as church, sports, and exercising recreationally.
