Throughout the school year, Partin students are learning important social-emotional and life skills through the Overcoming Obstacles curriculum. These lessons focus on skills like cooperation, responsibility, respect, integrity, kindness, perseverance, conflict resolution and more.
Our PTA Social-Emotional Learning Challenge gives families a simple way to continue those lessons at home, while giving students a fun way to show what they’ve learned.
Cooperation means listening, sharing ideas, taking turns, helping one another and working together toward a common goal.
Learning to cooperate helps children build stronger relationships, become better teammates, solve problems together and understand that everyone can contribute something valuable.
Try working some of these questions naturally into your conversations:
What makes someone a good teammate?
When did you work together with someone today?
How does it feel when someone really listens to your ideas?
What can you do when you and someone else have different ideas?
What is something that’s easier when we work together?
There aren’t necessarily right or wrong answers. The goal is simply to get kids talking and thinking about cooperation.
Everyday family life provides plenty of opportunities to practice!
Complete a chore or family project together instead of dividing everything into individual jobs.
Choose a game that encourages teamwork, listening and taking turns.
Encourage your child to listen to another person’s idea before sharing their own.
When a disagreement happens, ask: “How can we work together to solve this?”
Notice it when it happens!
Try saying:
“I noticed how you listened to everyone’s ideas.”
“You two worked together to figure that out!”
“Thank you for helping without being asked.”
“That was great teamwork.”
Recognizing the behavior helps children understand exactly what cooperation looks like in real life.
