Design and Technology assist students to appreciate and explore a range of careers in the field of Design and Technology Innovation. The design and production of quality projects gives students the opportunity to identify problems and opportunities, research and investigate existing solutions, analyse data and information, generate, justify and evaluate ideas, and experiment with technologies to manage and produce design projects. The diverse learning experiences encourage both independent and collaborative learning and the development of skills in designing, planning, managing and evaluating, which are transferable across the curriculum. The diversity of approaches to design projects provides the scope to develop thinking skills and caters for a variety of student needs, abilities and interests where students are encouraged to take risks and experiment with resources when developing projects.
The content of this course is taught through the use of projects, which are activities that allow the students to design, produce and evaluate to create a solution for an identified problem. The content of projects focuses on problem solving, generating ideas, creating a prototype, managing, communicating, collaborating and evaluating design solutions.
Projects in this course involve being innovative and being hands-on with a different range of technology. The course focuses on 3 content areas which are a holistic approach, design processes and activity of designers. Some of the areas that students will looking into are Textiles, Industrial technology, Architecture, Drawing standards and Electronics.
The Design and Technology course requires students to be motivated independent learners, with a passion for design and innovation. Students need skills in problem solving, collaboration with other peers, good time management and organisation for their projects.
Students must have their own laptop which is capable of storing and editing large files. iPads and chromebooks are not suitable for use in this course. If a student wishes to choose the course but doesn’t have access to a laptop, alternative arrangements can be made.
The Adobe Creative Suite will be available for students to download and use for the entirety of the course.

You get excited by designing and creating prototypes and are proud to showcase your work.
You are creative and enjoy a challenge!
What kind of practical work might we do in Design and Technology?
Each year we focus on a different area of study to provide us with knowledge in all design fields. Some of the areas we will be looking into are Textiles, Timber, Architecture, drawing standards and techniques and Electronics
Why can’t I use my iPad or Chromebook in Design and Technology?
Generally the software that we use can’t be run on these devices due to the size and capabilities they need in order to run.
I have more questions, who can I ask?
