There are plenty of opportunities for individuals to get active. These opportunities can arise in the form of:
structured settings (organised)
recreational settings (pleasure)
incidental physical activity (by chance)
Structured physical activity is an intentional form of exercise which is designed to increase the quality and/or intensity of physical activity
Structured activities can be either indoors or outdoors
Organisation which run structured physical activities include: sporting clubs, schools or sports programs eg. Duke of Edinburgh
In your workbook list all of the structured forms of physical activity that you have been involved in.
Examples:
Holroyd Netball Club
Merrylands Swimming Club
Cerdon Bootcamp
In pairs, list the benefits and limitations of participating in structured physical activity.
Incidental activity refers to any small form of movement that accumulates throughout the day, resulting in an increased level of daily activity. This form of activity doesn’t happen at the gym, but instead relies on your daily choices. it is any movement that occurs as a result of your daily activities.
Incidental activity refers to any situation where you choose to be active. Examples include:
Taking the stairs instead of the elevator
Walking instead of driving
Playing a yard game instead of a board game with the kids
Walking the dog instead of letting him roam the yard
Standing more often at work
Moving while watching TV
Cleaning the house
Cooking dinner
Incorporating more incidental activity into your day is one aspect of creating a more active lifestyle. While scheduling out 30 minutes a day to exercise is great, it doesn’t counteract sedentary behaviour throughout the rest of your day.
Answer the following questions in your book:
Define the term ‘incidental activity’ in your own words.
How much incidental activity would do you do in an average day? List each activity and how long you would spend exercising for each.
What are the benefits that an individual could receive from increasing their levels on incidental activity?
What are some ways you could incorporate more incidental activity into your day to day life? (Give at least 3 examples)
Recreational activities can be either competitive or non-competitive, but tend to occur in a natural or outdoor environment during leisure time. In recent years, recreational activity has become immensely popular as a fun way of staying active. Examples of recreational physical activities include:
bushwalking
skateboarding
cycling
surfing
As a class, brainstorm settings where recreational physical activity could occur eg. National Park
Take a look at all the cycle routes available in the Merrylands area and answer the following question below.
Evaluate the effectiveness of Parrmatta's Cycle Paths in creating opportunities for physical activity. Consider aspects such as convenience, safety and enjoyment.
