SUCESS CRITERIA:
Apply a range of strategies to build resilience when being bullied.
Leaving school doesn’t mean negative relationships disappear.
Harassment and discrimination are a part of adulthood too.
Unfortunately, negative relationships a part of life—it is likely that sometime during your life there will be people that you do not get along with or bully you.
Is there a way that you could stop this behaviour?
Could you teach a friend how to do it?
1. Using humour, how can you reply when a bullier users the following
comments on you:
a) "You're hair is so frizzy and ugly."
b) "Everyone thinks you're a joke."
c) "I could take you down with one punch."
d) "Can't you wear nice clothes on mufti day?"
There are a variety of ways that we can support others who may be going through a rough time, whether that be bullying or some sort of abuse. They include:
🔴 tell someone about whats going on
🔴 ignore the bully (when possible)
🔴 develop a high sense of self esteem.
🔴 use humour
🔴 eat regular and nutritious meals
🔴 focus on finding positive relationships
🔴 make realistic goals and work towards achieving them

3. Read the following scenarios to answer the questions:
a) Determine which charcters in each scenario were resilient.
b) What qualities does the character need to become more resilient?
Sia accidentally falls over Mary during their PE lesson. They both clash into each other and have grazed their legs when they hit the floor. Sia starts yelling at Mary blaming her for her injuries, and calling her a loser who can't walk in a straight line properly. Mary stands up, wipes away her tears and walks to the bathroom to clean herself up.
Elissa and Joy are both applying for homeroom leader. Just before their speech Elissa starts doubting her abilities, whilst Joy repeats some motivating quotes to herself. Joy was nominated as the leader and Elissa stormed out of the room crying and mouthing how Joy didn't deserve the position.
4. Select a time in your life that was particularly emotionally challenging or demanding. Discuss with a partner how you handled the situation:

❔ What unpleasant feelings/thoughts do you remember having in the situation?
❔ Who, if anyone, did you receive external help and support from?
❔ What specific attitudes and skills helped you cope with the situation?
❔ How would you rate your resilience in that situation?
❔ If it wasn’t 100%, how could your resilience be improved during similar situations in the future?
❔ What strengths and personal qualities helped you?
❔ Based on your experience how might you advise someone else to cope with a similar situation in the future?
5. Identify and explain resources that young people may utilise when they need help.
