Today I was introduced to the Wonder Rocket Challenge. We first did some team exercises. Watched a video and discussed role we would play into the rocket launch. I am a designer and these are my crew members. Havilla, Reid and Bethany. I am the manager of the group and I am looking forward to the rocket launch.
I am excited about designing, creating and improving my rocket with my crew members.
I wasn't here! But here is a photo of my group!
Today we worked on force. There are 3 forces, thrust, weight and drag. We first went outside and did a force activity. We also drawn a rocket and colored them in. Then finally we watched a video. Right now I am making a paper rocket! We used a pencil and wrapped it around with paper. then we blew through a straw and it burst forward. it was pretty call and easy. it was made from paper and a straw and some sellotape. I added wings to my rocket and it was 10x better.
Today we launched 3 rockets. One had a little bit of water and it went about 5m high. Then the second on went out 8m. Then the 3rd one went 10m high. then lastly the last one we did went 20m high because we didn't add any water! Then after that we went into our groups and came up with some questions. Our one's were weird like why our cheetahs so fast? Also what was the man doing to the cow when he found out about milk?
This one went second
This one 3rd
This one 1st
Today we made some paper planes of our own design. My plane had a lot of force but not enough mass. I needed to fold the front so it would stray in the air longer. The thrust was really good but the drag dragged it down to quickly. Then we went ahead and designed our rocket and we originally went with 15m but we ran out of tape so we went with 13m. My rocket has an awesome design and I am have now got an aerodynamic, weight and drag proof, lift able design for my rocket. Havilla, Reid, Bethany and I worked together to measure the length of 13m.
P.s it was really fun!
Today we are starting to design our rockets. We are going to test out the center of mass and make sure the nose cone is stable and is not to close to the mass. I have two bottles and I am lending one to a sort of a friend Caitlin and I get another bottle next week.
We designed a rocket as a group and I did not start on my rocket because I wanted to wait for the paint and other materials to get here next week. But I have designed and made my wings and they are pretty cool. They are green, blue, and it has a diamond and sparkly tape on it. My wings are aerodynamic and they have a very good design. I am going to spray paint my bottle silver and then have colorful glue and tape it will look AWESOME!!
Today we are learning about Newton third law of motion which is thrust. Then we are going to start designing. After that we will launch the rockets! Right now we just finished a mini test remembering Newtons first and Second law and answering questions. Then we went and launched our rockets. We went and filled our bottles 250ml of water then stuck on the nose cone and went outside. We set up the pump and then we launched. My my one went about 15m up then it came down. After that the pump was going a bit funny. When Reid pulled the trigger it didn't go up. Ms Chowlfin went and put her face to examine the bottler then it sprayed up she got drenched and it just skimmed her nose! It was really funny but also really dangerous. So next time just maybe safer. By the way when my rocket came down it hit the concrete and my wings came off. But i glue them back on anyway.
We quickly just went through the systems and what we are going to be doing today. We are going to launch our rockets, measure the angle, and the angle will be 45 angle. I am going to be recording my rocket. Such as air pressure, water level, and the time in the air. We will be test flying it at least once.
We just launched and it was epic! My rocket didn't go because it was broken so I worked with Caitlin. It went 23m and it stayed in the air for 3.88s which was good. The furthest rocket was 65m which was Ashas. Caitlin and I ran back and forth with the nozzle. It was an angle 45 and the water was 250ml.
Today we are doing the three laws of motion and how they apply to rockets. Then we are launching the rockets! His first law was Inertia, each force has a even bigger force, then each action has a reaction. Now we are going to weigh the rockets. The force pushes the rocket up, drag pulls it down, then the weight pulls down as well. We need to know this because we are going to weigh the rockets. I have weighed my rocket it weighs 400g. My rocket flew 18m and stayed in the air for 1.72s. It was really fun.
Here was my friends rocket
