The theme of the book Magyk by Angie Sage is to take the chance to be trusted if you can. When Boy 412 was on Muriel, he didn’t take the chance to be trusted by Jenna. While on Muriel, Jenna“felt Boy 412 take a deep breath, and she knew exactly what he was going to do. Yell.” (Sage 124) Boy 412 wanted to redeem himself and return to the Young Army. By trying to turn himself in, Jenna and Nicko began to distrust him. “Jenna, who had not been the only girl in a family of six boys without learning a thing or two, had Boy 412 facedown on the deck in an armlock.” (Sage 129) If Boy 412 hadn’t tried to betray the crew of Muriel, Jenna would not have put him in a headlock. Boy 412 saved Jenna when the Hunter was after her by sacrificing his secret and pulling her into the hole in the bushes. Boy 412 had cherished his secret, but he knew that Jenna would be safe in the underground temple, so he gave it up for Jenna’s trust and safety. He was rewarded with the rock, which Jenna gave to him as a thank you gift. They escape from the Hunter and Jenna gives the rock (which is really a rare dragon egg) to Boy 412 when she finds it in gratitude. If Boy 412 hadn’t sacrificed his secret, then they wouldn’t have escaped from the Hunter, and he wouldn’t have received the rock. In conclusion, the theme of the book Magyk by Angie Sage is to take the chance to be trusted if you can. Boy 412 was not taking the chance to be trusted before, but when he gave up his secret for trust, he was rewarded.
