History at KS3 provides students with a curriculum based on European, local and world history. The aim is to provide students with a coherent knowledge and understanding of the past, supported by a range of historical concepts which helps students to develop their questioning skills, judgement and perspective, and understanding of abstract terms.
The KS3 curriculum is designed chronologically, ranging from the Middle Ages through to the late 20th Century. It covers substantive concepts such as: empire, revolution, religion, power, monarchy, freedom, peasantry, political ideologies, etc. The curriculum also assesses students’ understanding of the key historical concepts, such as: causes and consequences; change and continuity; significance; historical interpretations; evidential understanding.
Featured Work: Holocaust Memorial Project, Y9
Between January and March 2021, students in Y9 completed their unit on the Holocaust. They studied the story of persecution before the Nazi Party took power in Germany as well as the increasing violence the Jewish community experienced as Nazi Germany grew in power, occupying vast swathes of Europe. In 1942, the Final Solution and atrocities committed by the Nazis led to the murder of 6 million Jews. Often, a unit in History ends with an extended piece of writing in which students put together their learning and shape an argument. However, the nature of the Holocaust demanded a different approach. The students instead were asked to reflect on their learning and how we remember such atrocities. See here for the lesson resources used to help students plan their project. And see below for a selection of work produced.
