The fourth graders worked on a self portrait project recently. They drew themselves from observation in the mirror through a guided routine with a focus on facial proportion and careful observational skills. Next they used a wide variety of media to complete the backgrounds and frames including oil pastel, liquid watercolor, watercolor, pencil, marker, crayon and collage. Some of these portraits are still in progress. The fourth graders viewed and discussed the portrait and self portrait work of Kehinde Wiley, Frida Kahlo and Hung Lui (see below). They were asked to reflect on how these artists represent aspects of their identity through visual symbols.

Artist Shantell Martin
is a visual artist best known for her large scale, black-and-white drawings. She performs many of her drawings for a live audience. Born in Thamesmead, London, Martin lives and works in New York. Along with exhibitions and commissions for museums and galleries, Martin frequently works on international commercial projects, both private and public.
Below the surface of Shantell Martin’s signature black and white drawings is an artists’ inquiry into the role of artist and viewer, where a work of art is more than an object of admiration disconnected from its inception. With a meditative process defined by an uninhibited flow, her compositions embody her internal state and the impermanence of the world around her. Exploring themes such as intersectionality, identity and play, Martin is a cultural facilitator, forging new connections between fine art, education, design, philosophy and technology.
