Government Reviews Possible Corruption in Flood Control Projects amid Widespread Flooding

“Mahiya naman kayo!” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared during the 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) held last July 28 after calling for the investigation of those involved in corrupt practices in recent flood control projects. This was prompted by the frequent floods in different areas of the country despite the Marcos administration funding of over ₱545 billion to flood control projects starting in July 2022. Out of the 9,856 projects started over the last four years, approximately 6,021, which is collectively worth more than ₱350 billion, “do not specify the exact type of flood control built or rehabilitated.” This implies the creation of“ghost projects,” projects that have been approved and funded but not officially implemented.

On the 21st of September, thousands of Filipinos marched through the streets of Manila, rallying for the acknowledgement of the unfinished and abandoned flood control projects all around the Philippines that each cost over millions of pesos.
One of the notable places where many protesters showed their disapproval was in Mendiola, a street that leads directly to the Malacañang Palace. The regional police in the area noted that while most rallies were peaceful, the protests in Ayala Bridge and Mendiola “turned very violent."
6.9 Magnitude Earthquake in Cebu highlights urgent need for disaster resilience

On September 30, 2025 at 9:59 p.m., a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Bogo City in the province of northern Cebu. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the quake’s epicenter approximately 19 kilometers northeast of Bogo City, with a shallow depth measuring of approximately 5 kilometers. Based on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS), the earthquake registered an Intensity VII, also categorized as “Destructive” and was felt in nearby municipalities including Medellin, San Remigio, and Daanbantayan. The agency also said that by Wednesday morning, more than 700 aftershocks—although most having minor effects—had been recorded. “These aftershocks could persist for several days to weeks, and some may be felt in nearby provinces” PHIVOLCS said.

Last November 17, 2022, PAREF Woodrose School hosted the official signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Rosedale Global High School and the Parents for Education Foundation Inc, more commonly known as PAREF. With this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), PAREF students are given the opportunity to apply for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma program (OSSD) which opens up new opportunities for the students to apply to top universities abroad.
