We’ve been stuck at home since the start of the pandemic. I was at home yesterday; I’m at home today, and I’ll be at home tomorrow. In this never-ending cycle, it’s sometimes easy to think of our homes as a jail rather than a place of comfort.
I’ve lived in my village the majority of my life — I learned how to ride my scooter on Padilla Street; I conquered the monkey bars on De Las Alas Drive, and I’ve run away from ghosts on Yuchenco.
17 years old and walking on these pavements today, I see my yesterday. My home is the bridge between the past me and present me. My home is woven within these streets, hidden between each crack and crevice of asphalt.
In a year, I’m going to college and I’m probably not going to live here anymore. I won’t hear the calls of the manong selling taho every morning. I won’t be able to bring my dog to the park everyday. I won’t see the smiles of children swinging in the playground. I won’t be home.
But, that’s okay. I realized that home isn’t a place; my home lies within me, in the memories I have stored between each vessel of my heart. Home will always be there to welcome me, whether it be my past, present, or future self.

Maligayang Araw ng mga Bayani!
Today would merely be another non-school/work day for some of us. Nevertheless, we ought to keep in mind the significance this day holds.
Even with the challenges on our plate, we shall honor the courage, perseverance, and altruism of all the heroic figures in our lives, for allowing us to be where and who we are today. From the bayani(s) of our country’s past who fought for liberty, peace, and justice – to the healthcare workers, teachers, and media personnel who continue to laboriously serve in the face of a pandemic – and to our family and friends who nurture us with strength and comfort, especially during our dark times, may we always remember how we, Filipinos, are now able to live life with ease and freedom.
