Cells

Walt: Describe what is a cell

SC: Identify the parts of a plant and animal cell

Cell Cryptogram

Cells are the building blocks of living organisms. All living things are made of cells. Your body contains over three billion cells. Most cells are very small and can only be seen with a microscope.

Some organisms consist of only one cell. They are complete organisms and can lie independently for other organisms. Euglena contain chlorophyll and can make their own food.

Large organisms contain many different types of cells and each type of cell has a special job to do. For example, in the human body, red blood cells carry oxygen, muscle cells contract and relax to move bones, nerve cells conduct nerve messages and stomach lining cells make substances which help in the digestion of food.

The cells of living things vary in shape and function, but they do have things in common. Click on the links below to learn more about the different structures found in plant and animal cells. Be able to identify and explain the function of the following structures found in these cells:

    - Cell membrane                            - Cell wall                            - Cytoplasm

    - Nucleus                                        - Vacuoles                            - Chloroplasts

Plant and animal cells can have different structures in them. In google Docs make a list of structures found in animal and plant cells. Explain why some of them are only found in plants and not animal cells. Use the link "Plant or Animal Cells" to help.
