Why have we started esports?
Our journey started with the 'Young Innovators' team who took the opportunity to be leaders at the Tech 21 summit. A range of Maori and Pasifika students were presented with a unique experience to be involved in and attend the Tech 21 summit held on the 24th May 2021. Our rangatahi were able to lead and open up the summit to 1500 students across schools from South Auckland. PHS Kapa Haka ākonga welcomed the audience with waiata's and karakia as well as the haka to industry leaders including Sir Ian Taylor and Amber Taylor (No they are not related!). Our tamariki explored the Imgaine zone and were blown away by the technologies that were hosted. This sparked an interest in learning through VR and AR.
Esports was introduced to our kura and ākonga, during the Careers in Games’ week held on the 14th-18th 2021. The online events helped connect and inspire ākonga from every culture to discover careers in one of Aotearoa's fastest growing creative industries - esports through gaming.
We registered and watched the live stream of the first event during the school day and launched esports with huge interest!
This provided access to an industry that may not otherwise be visible or accessible for people in our local community. This was also streamed to parents and whanau on Wednesday 16th June 2021 and focused on Careers in the Gaming Industry.
